Pankow Builders Specialty: General contractor, with a focus on design/build projects Principals: Bruce McBride, vice president, Pacific Northwest regional manager; Charles Hafenbrack, director of business development; Mark Fellows, project sponsor; Eric Holopainen, project sponsor Year founded: 2000 Seattle office, moved to Bellevue in 2001 Location: Bellevue Biggest local project in 2001: The 53,000-square-foot head quarters office for Provail
The focus for Pankow Builders last year was on establishing its presence in the local market. As one of the largest general contractors in the United States, Pankow set up a Seattle office in 2000 and moved to Bellevue in 2001. “Our efforts last year concentrated on continuing to create brand awareness for our firm in this market,” said Charles Hafenbrack, director of business development. “We are building up our office and staff in this market, so we look forward to a fairly steep growth curve.”
Locally, Pankow’s largest project for 2001 was the 53,000-square-foot headquarters for Provail. The first phase involved the complete demolition and rebuild of the building, including seismic and structural upgrades, and tenant improvements. In the second phase, Pankow built a new 40,000-square-foot steel frame building that was integrated with the existing building.
Hafenbrack said the company expects to do well in 2002. “As owners and developers gain confidence after the events of last year, we expect that 2002 will finish off as a better year than last year for our office here,” he said. “Tenant improvements, residential, retail and medical projects look to be our best opportunities for 2002.” Most of Pankow’s projects, about 70 percent, use the design/build delivery method, although the company works in all types of project delivery. “Design/build has proven to deliver projects sooner and at less cost by consolidating the entire design and construction process,” Hafenbrack said. “Response has been most positive from clients who want to make quicker go/no-go decisions about their projects and want to spend less predevelopment dollars from their budgets getting to those decisions.” Pankow is looking at a variety of projects right now, Hafenbrack said, and expects to add staff in the coming year. “The future looks bright and we look forward to sharing the benefits of our approach and developing relationships with industry leaders in all disciplines in the region.” |
