Berger Partnership

The Berger Partnership staff size holds steady at 31 this year. While some markets have slowed — such as commercial development — others like public sector projects and educational facilities continue to provide steady income, according to President Jeff Girvin.

Berger’s 22 years of work with Nordstrom nationwide continues to serve as a constant in the marketing mix. Larger projects this past year included educational facilities ranging in scope from athletic field design to student housing and environmental learning centers to playgrounds.

Two niches emerging late last year include master planning and columbarium garden design for houses of worship, and projects striving for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The firm has been involved in three LEED-certified projects, and one of them — IslandWood (formerly Puget Sound Environmental Learning Center) — has the “gold” designation.

Projects:

  • Sand Point Magnuson Park for the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation includes a complex of 15 athletic fields and a 56-acre constructed wetland habitat, all on a 156-acre site at heart of the park.

  • Gas Works Park green space will redevelop a forgotten corner of the park and create a link with the neighborhood.

  • Terry Avenue North streetscape plan and South Lake Union development involve work with the city of Seattle and property owners in the area.

  • University of Washington Merrill Hall Horticultural Center replacement, with Miller/Hull, will rebuild the urban horticulture center and add a landscaped biofiltration system.

  • Landscape renovations for the King County Library System.
