Light Rail Environmental Assessment
Sound Transit, the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority, has developed additional light rail station and maintenance base alternatives since publication of its draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Central Link light rail project proposed between SeaTac and north Seattle. An Environmental Assessment (EA) analyzing these alternatives is now available for public review and comment, in compliance with the National and State Environmental Policy Acts. The EA addresses the following alternatives:
MAINTENANCE BASE SITES ; new alternative sites in the north Duwamish Industrial Area are evaluated in addition to the site analyzed in the draft EIS;
UNIVERSITY DISTRICT 45TH ST. STATION ; impacts of locating the light rail station on the west side of 15th Ave. N.E. are evaluated, along with those associated with a station on the east side;
CAPITOL HILL STATION AND TUNNEL CROSSOVER TRACK ; impacts of using cut-and-cover construction for the station and crossover track locations on Capitol Hill are analyzed.
The document is available at the Sound Transit main office at the address below as of August 9th. Copies will also be available for review at area libraries and community centers. A 30-day public comment period will close on Sept. 8, 1999 at 5:00 p.m. (PDT). Comments can be submitted at any of the public meetings listed below, or in the form of written letter with a signature and return address sent to:
James Irish, Environmental Project Manager, Central Link EA, Sound Transit, 1100 Second Avenue, Suite 500, Seattle, WA 98101-3423.
This EA and all comments and responses will be incorporated into the final EIS, which is scheduled for completion and issuance this fall. Sound Transit will hold three public meetings to present information and receive comments on the EA.
