This category had the most entries, an even dozen. They ranged from a community college's library building to a city's concrete restroom. The entries included the following projects: S.O.G. Specialty Knives, Precision Replacement Parts office and distribution center, Simpson Tacoma Landing Co., Grays Harbor County Forestry Building, Willows Commercial Park, Van Doren Sales Inc., Building 24, Holman Library at Green River Community College, a concrete restroom for the city of Vancouver, Glad Tidings Church, Pacific Coast Showcase and McKnight Middle School.

Glad Tidings Church

The category winner was the Glad Tidings Church in Vancouver. The facility was originally designed to be a steel building, but the contractor recommended the use of tilt-up concrete to cut costs and speed up construction. While the church was being built, the slab was poured using a laser screed machine and the resulting superflat surface became a casting bed for wall panels. The largest wall panels measured 50 feet tall, 15 feet wide and 10 inches thick.

First runner-up honors went to the Simpson Tacoma Landing Co. project. That project involved construction of three tilt-up buildings totaling 302,000 square feet. The tricky part of the project was the site -- a former log pond that had varying layers of wood chips, loose fill and asphalt pavements. Subsurface exploration discovered wood fill varied in depth between two and 20 feet.

A geotechnical report of the site determined the buildings could experience long-term settlements in the magnitude of 3 inches (plus or minus an inch) over 100 feet of length. Pilings were ruled out because of their cost. The solution was to allow the buildings to undergo deformations unrestrained. That was done by enabling each wall panel to adjust independently by eliminating panel-to-panel connections at all locations. To eliminate possible panel bind, joints were located in the floor slab at each panel.

Simpson Tacoma Landing Co.

The Van Doren Sales project in East Wenatchee was the second runner-up. It features 65,000 square feet of office space and a separate 10,000-square-foot paint/shotblast building. In addition to the tilt-up panels for the buildings, concrete was also selected for a 50,000-square-foot exterior laydown and truck maneuvering area.
