Demand for design services was up in September after a slight dip the previous month.
The Architecture Billings Index score was 53.7 in September, up from 49.1 in August, according to the American Institute of Architects.
The AIA produces the index, which reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. Any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings.
AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker said there's concern about materials costs and a shortage of skilled construction workers. He said there's uneven demand for design in the Northeast, but the other regions are in good shape.
The South scored the highest in Septembers, at 54.5. It was followed by the Midwest at 54.2, the West at 51.7 and the Northeast at 43.7.
