Design Perspectives: Preparing now for a warmer, wetter future

    The National Weather Service predicts a warmer-than-normal winter for the South Sound. That usually means heavy rains and flooding.

    Olympia has been hit by a major storm about every 10 years, according to Pete Swensson, senior planner with Thurston Regional Planning Council. That's about how often heavy rains and rising waters in the Deschutes River meet high tides and storm surges in Budd Inlet, one of the southern toes of Puget Sound.
