Design Perspectives: Politicians’ viaduct plan a formula for deadlock

I’m not angry that Gov. Chris Gregoire did not make a decision about replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct, which would have decided the fate the Seattle waterfront. I’m grateful.

I am angry, however, about what she did decide. She decided to cut the least costly option, and the one that most resembles what many other cities have already done — to take down an elevated highway along the waterfront and replace it with a number of different modes and surface options. Her decision clearly favored people who prefer to pass by the city in their cars over the people in the city itself.
