Dames & Moore

James Thornton has joined Dames & Moore as a senior environmental planner. He has provided environmental permitting consulting to the pulp and paper industry, the energy industry and to governmental agencies. He was formerly senior environmentalist with the Washington State Department of Ecology, and has served on numerous citizen advisory boards and technical advisory committees, including Puget Sound Science Advisory Board. Stephen Kucas Jr. has assumed responsibility as senior fisheries biologist for the environmental services group in the Pacific Northwest offices of Dames & Moore. He has over 14 years technical and management experience in habitat identification and analysis, resource inventories, species surveys and design of watershed rehabilitation and mitigation programs. John Heal has joined the firm as a wetlands biologist. Previously a senior water quality engineer for King County, he has order eight years experience assessing wetlands, conducting stream surveys, and providing watershed management and water quality management. Rik Langendoen has transferred to the Seattle office after four years in Dames & Moore's Spokane office. As a senior geologist in the geosciences group, he will be responsible for the management of environmental, engineering geology and geologic hazards projects throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Freiheit & Ho

Arthur S. Chang has been promoted to the status of associate at Freiheit & Ho Architects, Inc. He joined the firm in 1991 as an architectural intern, and has most recently served as job captain on several office, retail restaurant and ecclesiastical projects. He recently completed the requirements for registration as an architect in the State of Washington.

FFA

Barbara Clement has joined Fletcher Farr Ayotte (FFA) of Portland as a project manager. She is currently working on several projects for Fred Meyer, the Greenwood Inn in Vancouver and upcoming renovations at the Oregon State Capitol building. Destin Ferdun is a CAD draftsperson working on projects for the National Park Service and Fred Meyer. In addition to sharing responsibility for computer management and troubleshooting at FFA.

PCA courses

The Portland Cement Association has released its schedule for fall and winter courses in the cement and concrete fields. Courses planned this fall include: Concrete for Cement Industry Personnel, Oct. 2-6; Microscopy of Clinker and Cement, Oct. 9-13; Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician-Grade I, Oct. 9-12; Cement Manufacturing for Process Engineers and Plant Technical Personnel, Oct. 16-19; Microscopy of Clinker and Cement, Oct. 16-20; Advanced Topics in Concrete Technology, Oct. 23-26; Cement Chemist's Workshop on X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis, Oct. 23-25; Mill Grinding, Oct. 30-Nov. 3; Concrete: Principles and Practices, Nov. 6-10; Troubleshooting: Solutions to Concrete Field Problems, Nov. 13-15; Two-Day Workshop: Practical Repair Methods and Materials, Nov. 16-17; Two-Day Workshop: How to Control Cracking and Prevent Surface Defects in Concrete, Nov. 30-Dec. 1; and Kiln Process, Dec. 11-15. Jack Miller seminar

Jack Miller is on the road again for his 27th consecutive year of delivering construction industry seminars. The first stop will be in Nashville, Tenn. A seminar on total quality management will be given Oct. 2-3, followed by marketing on Oct. 5-6 and design/build/lease/financing on Oct. 9-10. The next stop will be in Chicago. TQM will be given Oct. 30-31, marketing Nov. 2-3 and design/build/lease/financing Nov. 6-7. Miller will be in Philadelphia Dec. 4-5 for TQM and Dec. 7-8 for marketing. His final stop will be in Orlando, Fla. TQM will be given Jan. 15-16, marketing Jan. 18-19, and design/build/lease/financing Jan. 22-23. Attendance at each seminar satisfies 14.4 classroom hours of continuing education units. Also, each seminar has been approved by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board. American Marketing Association

Stan Laegreid, associate principal and retail specialist from Seattle-based Callison Architecture, will discuss "Entertainment Retail Unplugged -- Retail Design as a Marketing Strategy" at the September 26 breakfast program of the American Marketing Association's Puget Sound Chapter. Callison provides a broad range of architectural, interior and graphic design services to business leaders worldwide. The firm has been responsible for dozens of major shopping center renovations around the country as well as retail construction, including Grand Gateway, a 3.2-million-square-foot retail entertainment facility in Shanghai, China. For 20 years, Callison has also been the exclusive designer for Nordstrom department stores. In addition to his work for Nordstrom stores and shopping centers, Laegreid helps manage the firm's work in South America. Among some of the principal projects, Legreid oversees the design of Chile's largest department store, Fallabella. The program will be held from 7:15 to 9 a.m. at Bellevue's Red Lion Inn. Base-Line Inc.

Auburn-headquartered Base-Line Inc., an international manufacturer of graphic arts supplies, is expanding its sales staff. Jeffrey C. Plumb has been named account representative for the West Coast, responsible for supporting the company's dealers in 19 states. Most recently, Plumb served as a systems consultant with a major telecommunications company. Kelly R. LaLonde is the new inside sales/customer services representative. He joins Base-Line from a senior sales position at an international distribution company.
