Hornall Anderson Design Works

Seattle's Hornall Anderson Design Works (HADW) has received London International Advertising Awards' highest commendation in the category of non-alcoholic beverages packaging for its Talking Rain sparkling ice cans packaging, one of HADW's five finalist entries. The awards competition annually honors the world's most creative television/cinema commercials, radio commercials, print advertising and package design. Additional HADW finalist entries included the Starbucks Coffee Company 1994 annual report, Frank Russell Company LifePoints brochure, Corbis direct mail piece and GE Capital Assurance promotional kit.

Hurley, Atkins & Stewart

Hurley, Atkins & Stewart Inc., an independent insurance company with offices in Seattle and Everett, recently expanded its operations to include an employee benefits department. The new department will offer a variety of employee insurance options to large and small companies, as well as individuals. Founded in 1952, Hurley, Atkins & Stewart specializes in surety bonds and insurance coverage for contractors, and is also one of the largest writers of professional liability coverage for architects, engineers, accountants and attorneys in the Pacific Northwest.

Borders, Perrin and Norrander

Seattle-based small-ship cruise operator Alaska Sightseeing/Cruise West has chosen Borders, Perrin and Norrander as its advertising agency. The Seattle-based company will work primarily on print advertising, including consumer and trade magazine, and newspaper. Local design firm Williams & Helde will continue to assist the cruise line with production of brochures and other collateral material.

CCIM designation awarded

Mark Mugleston, a member of the Norman Company's property services group, was awarded the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation by the Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors. Of the estimated 80,000 commercial real estate practitioner nationwide, only 3,600 currently hold the CCIM designation. Mugleston is the director of leasing at Columbia Seafirst Center. The Norman Company, a Seattle-based commercial real estate firm, handles the property management and leasing of the building.

New University Book Store

The University Book Store will open its new professional and technical bookstore in downtown Seattle on Nov. 29. The store will be located on the corner of 4th Avenue and University Street in the building formerly occupied by United Airlines. The new store will offer selections in business, finance, law, engineering, science, computers, architecture, construction and medicine. The store plans a grand opening celebration the week of Dec. 4.

AdCorp

AdCorp has announced the appointment of Pam Tirado as an account executive, overseeing client services in the Redmond company's design, photography, electronic pre-press and printing facility. Tirado previously was director of new business development for Monaghan+Company of Bellevue.

Bellevue Art Museum

Children will get a chance to explore the behind-the-scenes world of theater at Bellevue Art Museum's hands-on exhibition Celebration Especially for Children: The Art of Theater, running from Dec. 9 through Feb. 4, 1996. Guest curated by Donna Porter, the exhibition will illustrate how a theatrical production emerges from an idea, to a script, into a full production for an audience through a vast array of materials including sets, costumes, props, design, drawings, models and photographs loaned to the museum from Puget Sound production companies. A storytelling area, art studio and temporary performance area will allow visitors to engage in interactive components. Children will be able to construct a small version of a stage, and operate a miniature dimmer board which is used to regulate stage lighting in theater.

MWW/Strategic Communications

MWW/Strategic Communications, parent company of Seattle's MWW/Savitt, has been named the hottest public relations agency in the United States for 1995 by Inside PR, an industry magazine covering public relations news and issues. The company, ranked second in last year's competition, advanced to first place due to its growth and the addition of several new services in 1994, including graphic and multimedia design, investor relations and high-tech public relations. Founded in November 1993, the Seattle-based firm now has 17 employees and billings of more than $2.8 million.

SDL Corp.

Carl Friis has been promoted from project engineer to project manager at SDL Corp. Friis has been with SDL for nearly six years. His latest accomplishments have been several Barnes & Noble Bookstores throughout the Seattle area.

ACPA annual meeting

31st American Concrete Pavement Association Annual Meeting will be held Nov. 28-Dec. 2 at the Marriott Marco Island Resort and Golf Club on Marco Island, Fla. The theme of this year's meeting is "ACPA ... Creating Tomorrow Today." New to the event will be technical day. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the latest technical advancements in concrete paving. The main event will be a construction quality symposium, which will include a discussion on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' new quality assurance specifications guide. Also featured will be a review of ultra-thin whitetopping's performance across the country and a look at what's new in non-destructive testing. Attendees are expected to include contractors, cement company executives, equipment and material suppliers, engineers, transportation officials and members of the press. Hot mix asphalt conference

The National Asphalt Pavement Association is holding its Third Annual United States Hot Mix Asphalt Conference Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in Irving, Texas. The theme of this year's conference is Exploring Quality and Performance. The program is designed for paving professionals from both the public and private sectors. Topics will include case studies of Superpave implementation, the latest in construction technologies, the impact of metrication and many others. Co-sponsors of the event include the Asphalt Institute, state Asphalt Pavement Associations, the Federal Highway Administration and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Safety competency training course

The Inland Northwest Associated General Contractors is holding a safety competency training course Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 6, 7 and 13 in Spokane. Class will be held each night from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The course is designed to help contractors develop safety-and health-competent persons for their jobsites. It provides instruction on fall protection, excavation and trenching safety, electrical safety, hand and power tool safety, materials handling safety, personal protective equipment, heavy equipment safety, fire prevention and protection, hazard communication, record keeping and OSHA's Focused Inspection Initiative. The course includes 10 hours of training, a comprehensive safety manual, a complete copy of OSHA's Safety Standards for Construction, AGC safety publications, AGC completion card and OSHA 10-hour construction safety standards course completion card.
