William Dutton of Dutton Promotional Advertising has been awarded the designation of Master Advertising Specialist (MAS) by the Promotional Products Association International. PPAInternational grants the designation to those who have made a commitment to increasing their educational growth in the industry. It is the only international trade association for the promotional products industry.

Tacoma Public Utilities

Catherine Leone-Woods has been appointed assistant manager - Transmission and Distribution Planning for Tacoma City Light. In her new position Leone-Woods will head a team that will be responsible for meeting City Light's power transmission and distribution needs for the near and long term. She has dealt with a variety of critical issues at City Light, including regional and regulatory matters. As an electrical engineer and a member of the Washington Bar Association, Leone-Woods has been involved in developing alternative power supply services for City Light's large industrial customers.

Cheshire Grin

Capitol Hill will house a new venture combining local designer fashions and a teahouse. Cheshire Grin, owned by Diane Stone, will serve pastries and tea by the pot and in bulk. Local designers will be featured offering an eclectic mix of fashions, hats, and jewelry. Cheshire Grin, located at 313 East Pine, opens at 8:00 a.m. Saturday June 8, and will celebrate with live jazz by the band House Blend during the afternoon.

Brian Fitzgerald has become a partner with Architects Reed Reinvald Johnson Willows of Tacoma. Fitzgerald has specialized in educational facilities and elderly care facilities, and practiced in Oregon for nine years before moving to Washington, where he has practiced in Olympia and Tacoma for the last nine years.

John H. Riley has joined RSP/EQE's Seattle office as senior project engineer and project manager. With over 10 years of experience in structural engineering, Riley has developed expertise in the design of new buildings and in retrofit projects, seismic analysis, and cost estimation in connection with seismic events. Greg J. Gilda has joined RSP/EQE as a project engineer, with seven years of professional experience including building design and seismic analysis.

Bumgardner

Jay Magnusson has joined the Bumgardner Architects as a intern architect. He is currently on the design team for the Inn at Port Gardner. Magnusson earned his bachelor's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1993. He also studied for one year at Helsinki University of Technology.

Ship Canal trail, park dedicated

The Seattle Engineering Department dedicated the new South Ship Canal Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail on Saturday, which was National Trails Day. The new trail section extends along the south side of the Ship Canal from the Fremont Bridge to Sixth Avenue West. The 0.75-mile trail runs through a new waterfront park, complete with new landscaping, benches and picnic tables. A section of iron rail has been preserved at the site to commemorate the historic Lake Shore & Eastern Railroad line that once ran along the corridor.

Cascade Designs

John Burroughs has been appointed president of Cascade Designs, the Seattle-based firm which makes self-inflating Therm-a-Rest mattresses. Burroughs was previously vice president. Former president Jim Lea will continue as chairman of the board and will concentrate on research and development. Burroughs and Lea co-founded Cascade Designs in 1972. Burroughs developed the market for the camping mattresses in the U.S. and abroad.
