New state revolving fund for drinking water

OLYMPIA -- The reauthorization of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act in August was accompanied by a new provision that will allow local communities to upgrade their drinking water supplies. Of the $1.3 billion that will be administered nationwide by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington state will be eligible for $30 million in grant money. The grants will be awarded to local communities next spring and summer for infrastructure and water quality improvements. The new drinking water state revolving fund will be patterned after the Clean Water Act state revolving fund, said Gerald Opatz, an environmental engineer with the EPA. The state Departments of Health and Community, Trade and Economic Development will oversee the awarding of the grants. For more information on how grant recipients will be chosen, call Dave Monthie at the Department of Health at (360) 664-9583.

The workshops will focus on both residential and commercial construction projects. Architects will share tips on how to prevent excess waste, and contractors will discuss their experience with waste management and other resource-efficient techniques. Advice also will be given on how to reduce toxicity in buildings. The workshops will take place between Oct. 11 and Nov. 22. They are being funded by the Department of Ecology, the Seattle Solid Waste Utility, King County Solid Waste Division and Metro Portland. Cost to attend a workshop is $30 in advance and $35 at the door. To receive a workshop program and schedule, call O'Brien & Co. at (206) 842-8995 or send e-mail to obrien@halcyon.com.
