Val Kiefer, president of Coyote Engineering Inc., an export management company located in Dayton, Washington, has received the 1996 "Chairman's Award of Appreciation" given by JETRO, the Japan External Trade Organization. The annual award is given to companies that are successful at promoting exports to Japan. Kiefer is the only U.S. citizen to win the award this year, and is the first Washington State resident to receive the honor. Coyote Engineering began as an engineering/machine shop then developed into a product exporting company after Kiefer provided technical assistance to a trading company in Japan on a product developed by Coyote. Kiefer realized there was a market for is specialty, outdoor equipment and began trading. The company now exports to 25 countries, representing some of America's and the Northwest's leading outdoor equipment manufacturers. Kiefer himself is generally acknowledged for introducing the sport of sea kayaking to the Japanese outdoor market.

Advanced Radio Telecom (ART), a wireless broadband telecommunications company, has promoted Richard Shields to senior vice president , technical operations, and Timothy Marshall to director, program management. Shields will be responsible for managing and directing the engineering and field services, network operations and technology development departments. Marshall will coordinate operational systems development for ART's technical functions and managing quality assurance and policies, procedures, and standards.

Merwin Productions, a Seattle film and video production company, has added three new positions to its corporate communications team. Andrew Baker joins as the digital and animation designer, Juli Morser will act as the agency and corporate executive producer and Cora Edmonds will be the executive producer for the technology division. Merwin produces corporate and public policy film and video projects throughout the U.S., Asia, and the British Isles.
The Traver Company has been selected by Step by Step Graphics to design a comprehensive sales and marketing collateral system for the Washington State Convention & Trade Center, which will be featured in Step by Step's 1997 Design Process Annual. The company will be showcased in an article depicting the design process of Jim Rittiman in a gallery exhibition catalogue produced for Meyerson & Nowinski Art Associates.

Ron Klemencic has been promoted to the level of principal at Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire Inc. (SWMB). Klemencic has been instrumental in the firm's expansion into overseas markets and in introducing innovative technologies into countries with emerging building industries. He is also active on a local level, working on developments such as Emerald Downs Racetrack, downtown Seattle's Pacific Place, and Microsoft Redmond West. Bob Anderson has joined SWMB as a top project manager. During the last eight years of his 18-year career, Anderson has served as structural engineer for 14 buildings on Microsoft's corporate campus.
Hewitt Isley has advanced Dennis E. Haskell, Paul A. Shema and Kris R. Snider to the level of principal. As an architect and planner, Haskell has 26 years experience in managing interdisciplinary design and development projects. He is chair of the Seattle Design Commission and of the Pine Street Advisory Task Force. Through his management of major transportation planning projects, he helped position Hewitt Isley as one of the area's authorities on the planning and design of multimodal facilities and ferry terminals. Shema was instrumental in the design and execution of two major downtown Seattle waterfront projects. He has been a project architect with the firm for 14 years. Snider is director of the landscape architecture studio at Hewitt Isley. Since joining the firm six years ago, he has been involved in designing open space and landscape improvements for urban housing, waterfront projects, commercial developments and transportation projects. In addition, Kevin J. Ryden has been promoted to the level of senior associate. He has managed and designed award-winning architectural projects and interpretive exhibits, and is presently at work on Sinclair Landing, a downtown Bremerton waterfront development plan.
Richard Carothers, president of Richard Carothers Associates (RCA), recently served as juror for the 1996 Excellence in Highway Design Competition in Washington D.C. The perennial design awards program attracted more than 260 entries in 10 categories. Carothers was joined by jurors from Boston, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Washington D.C.
Peter J. Martins has joined the Portland office of KPFF Consulting Engineers as a civil designer. He will focus on waterfront and marine engineering, and is currently working on Boones Ferry Marina, Columbia Shores Marina, and the East Bank Waterfront Park Project for the City of Portland.
Christopher Bigos has joined the staff of Zervas Group Architects of Bellingham as an architect-intern. He holds a master's degree in architecture from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was first place recipient of the Charles Correa Design Competition. He is now at work on the design of a waterfront home for a best-selling fiction writer.
Mark Dorsey has returned to the civil engineering and site development division of Art Anderson Associates. As a senior civil engineer, Dorsey is now at work on the Doctors Clinic of Silverdale and Bucklin Place Gas/Convenience and Video Store. Dorsey's prior projects include Harrison Memorial Hospital South Kitsap Campus and Kitsap County Youth Expansion. Kathleen Hayes has joined the administrative staff of Art Anderson Associates as receptionist.
Albert Kong has been named job captain at Weber + Thompson Architects. He oversees a wide variety of projects, including commercial developments, in the Seattle area.
Kelso Gillenwater, publisher of The News Tribune of Tacoma for the past five years, has been named vice president of operations for McClatchy Newspapers, the California-based company that owns The News Tribune. Gillenwater will oversee McClatchy's Bee newspapers in Sacramento, Fresno and Modesto, Calif., and its Washington, D.C., bureau. He also will supervise electronic publishing operations at each newspaper and nationally through Nando.net, the group's major online news service. The Wiley Brooks Company Phil Watkins has joined The Wiley Brooks Company, a Seattle-based public affairs firm, as a senior partner. Watkins previously served as district director to Congressman Randy Tate. Wiley Brooks specializes in issue management and advocacy, crisis communications, web-site design and governmental relations.
