TCA awards

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association is calling for entries to its 1998 Tilt-Up Achievement Awards competition for outstanding structures. Entries will be judged using four criteria: quality of construction, aesthetic appeal, creativity of structural and architectural design, and unique application or end use. Emphasis will be placed on projects that introduce new building types utilizing tilt-up concrete methods, advance industry technology, or provide a unique solution to a building problem. Projects must have been built between Sept. 1, 1996, and Sept. 1, 1997, and at least one member of the team must be a TCA member. The deadline for entries is Nov. 14. Recycling construction waste

SEATTLE -- The Washington State Construction, Demolition and Landclearing (CDL) Council will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at King County Solid Waste, 400 Yesler Way, Second Floor, Room 250, Seattle. The meeting is designed to bring members of the building industry together with government recycling coordinators, recycling haulers, processors and material end-users. The goal is to increase recycling of construction waste around the state. The CDL Council is part of the Washington State Recycling Association. The Council meets every two months to discuss a specific topic, material or issue. Speakers at this week's meeting will include: Lynne King of Sellen Construction Co.; Marilyn Skerbeck of Waste Management; John Yeasting of ReSourcing Associates; Elizabeth Daniel of Business & Industry Recycling Venture; and Theresa Koppang of King County Solid Waste. Ellerbe Becket

Gregory DiPaolo has joined the San Francisco office of Ellerbe Becket as senior vice president and design principal. His award-winning designs have been widely published, and his projects include 388 Market Street in San Francisco, Xin Min Newspaper Headquarters Building in Shanghai, and the China Resources headquarters building in Beijing. DiPaolo will have responsibility for developing and managing Ellerbe Becket work in the Pacific Rim.

Reid Middleton

George Marshall has joined Reid Middleton Inc. as a project surveyor. He has extensive experience with Global Positioning Surveys (GPS) and most recently completed a 50-mile GPS control survey for the Washington State Parks Rails to Trails program. Julian Dodge, also of Reid Middleton, has received his professional Engineer's certification. He has 10 years of experience in engineering design and construction for municipal, port, waterfront, and site development projects. Damon McAllister has joined the firm as a project engineer. Formerly with JUB Engineers of Boise, he will be responsible for design and technical support of municipal and private water and wastewater engineering projects. He is currently working on utility projects for the GSA Point of Entry in Blaine, and an airport hotel utilities extension project for the Port of Seattle at Seattle/Tacoma International Airport.

AESI

Associated Earth Sciences Inc. has added a biological sciences department to the firm and also expanded geophysical capabilities. Andrew Kindig, associate water resource specialist, will head the biological sciences department. He has provided technical expertise for projects involving extensive environmental assessments of water quality, storm water biotreatment and biological resource management. Steven Grupp, project geophysicist, will head the geophysical department at AESI. His background includes 20 years of varied geophysical experience, including million dollar projects for a major oil company, and teaching at the college level throughout the western and central U.S. Otto Paris has joined the firm as a senior project hydrogeologist. He is currently responsible for groundwater modeling and wellhead protection/source approval on a water system in Snohomish County. Robert Cousins has joined AESI as project geologist. He has completed numerous road, bridge, school, residential commercial and government projects in the state of Washington and throughout the Northwest, including the Whatcom County Courthouse and numerous education and medical facilities. Other additions to the AESI include staff geologists Jim Eader, Allan Wahl, Robert Bogar and Andrea Lonner, staff geotechnical engineers Barry Constant and Paul Heitman, and staff environmental engineer Melissa Magnuson.

Berger Abam

Frank Proctor has joined Berger/ABAM Engineers, Inc., as an engineer focusing on waterfront and transportation projects. He was most recently with Construction Technology Laboratories. Jeffrey Kilborn has joined the firm as an engineer working on waterfront and transportation structures. He recently served as a structural engineer at Lin & Associates. Paul Kluvers has joined the firm's Portland office as a project manager. He was recently with The Bentley Company.

Arai/Jackson

Karen Hansen has joined the staff of Arai/Jackson Architects & Planners of Seattle as marketing director. Most recently, she was an independent publicist, media consultant and graphic designer. Other additions to the Arai/Jackson staff include Huyen Hoang, Jeffrey Li and Homero Nishiwaki as intern architects this year.

Group Four

Sean G. Hyatt has joined the staff of Group Four, Inc. in Bothell as a project manager. He will act as director of commercial development, helping to establish relationships between architects and developers for civil engineering and planning projects in the region. Prior to joining Group Four, Hyatt spent seven years with W&H Pacific.

ALSC

G. Stephen Hindley has been elected president of ALSC Architects in Spokane. A principal at ALSC since 1987, Hindley has been involved with projects such as the Holland Library Addition at Washington State University, the Spokane Community College Business & Industrial Technology Building and the new School of Law Building at Gonzaga University.

August jury

The American Institute of Architects/Daily Journal of Commerce (AIA/DJC) Project of the Month for August, Sleeping Lady Retreat and Conference Center, was selected by Jeffrey Karl Ochsner, Chair of the University of Washington Department of Architecture, artist Linda Beaumont, architect David Hall of The Henry Klein Partnership, and architect Kirsten Mercer of NBBJ. Through the AIA/DJC Project of the Month, which appears in the Journal the first Wednesday of each month, the AIA and the Daily Journal of Commerce seek to bring attention to local buildings that serve users especially well and bring lasting value to owners. Submittals representing all project types -- with the exception of single-family residential -- are welcome.
