REDMOND -- Alan B. Jones has joined Lance Environmental LLC, a small environmental consulting firm started by Don Lance in Redmond three years ago. Most recently, Jones worked for Agra Earth & Environmental Inc. in Kirkland. Jones said Agra hired him in January 1997 to help lead the company's environmental group in a new direction. Jones said he encouraged Agra to get more involved in the environmental compliance arena, helping businesses complete all the plans, reports and permits required by regulatory agencies. Jones also was interested in helping businesses to minimize waste, prevent pollution and find alternatives for hazardous substances and raw materials. Meanwhile, Agra's Kirkland office specializes in Phase I and Phase II assessments and remediation design work, as well as lead paint and asbestos surveys. "I've left Agra and have continued in (the environmental compliance) direction, but with Lance Environmental," said Jones, who was laid off by Agra in September. "Compliance is a very big area. It's one that isn't going to go away. It's an area where lots of people are behind the eight ball." Since he joined Lance in September, Jones has landed a $50,000 contract to help a local health-care facility prevent dangerous wastes from going down the drain or into the Dumpster. He's also completed an environmental compliance job for a winery. In addition to joining Lance, Jones has started his own consulting firm that goes by the name Alan B. Jones, Ph.D. He has a doctorate in biochemistry from Boston University. Jones has eight years experience in the environmental industry. Before working for Agra, he spent a year and a half at Brooks Rand Ltd., a contract laboratory in Ballard that manufactures analytical instruments and does remediation work. Prior to that, he worked at Harding Lawson Associates with Lance. "In today's marketplace, if you don't keep learning and keep moving, you get left behind," Jones said. Both Jones and Lance now work out of their homes. "I do enjoy working at home," Jones said. "I can offer a more competitive billing rate than I could if I were working for a large company."
