Landau Associates is growing

EDMONDS -- Landau Associates, an environmental and geotechnical engineering consulting firm, has added staff and promoted six members of the firm. Pete Stoltz, a sediment specialist with 10 years' experience, has joined the home office in Edmonds. Heather Nielsen and Catherine Reidy have joined the same office as project coordinators. In the Spokane office, David Breen brings 10 years' experience in remediation of contaminated industrial sites to his new position with Landau. And Jackie Slakey is Landau's new project coordinator in the Tacoma office. The firm's Edmonds office has seen several staff promotions. Jay Bower is now an associate; Pete Rude has been promoted to senior chemist; Stacy Pischer has been named a project geologist; Mark Ahlstrom and Phil Burgmeier have been promoted to senior staff geologist; and Terrie Flaming is now human resources manager. Landau Associates employs 70 people in offices in Edmonds, Tacoma, Spokane and in a new office in Portland. The firm specializes in environmental site characterization, remedial design engineering, environmental compliance and permitting, and geotechnical engineering. Current projects include work on Ross Island, in Portland, and at the Western Processing Superfund site in Kent.

King County approves septic system regs

SEATTLE -- The King County Board of Health has approved amendments to Title 13 of the Code of the King County Board of Health. Known as the "On-Site Sewage Code," Title 13 governs the use of septic tank systems, including their design, construction, use, maintenance and repair. With the new amendments, the code will:

• Incorporate state-mandated changes;
• Provide for alternative technology;
• Require owners of septic systems to place a notice of it in their property title, and identify maintenance responsibilities;
• Streamline regulatory review for properties proposing to use alternative technology; and
• Require periodic septic-system monitoring to ensure its proper operation.

Carl Osaki, environmental health director for the Public Health Department, said the new regulations may be burdensome to some property owners, but are necessary for public health. The amendments go into effect in mid April.

American Construction

Everett-based American Construction Co. recently reorganized into three divisions -- Land, Marine and Equipment. Kevin Culbert was named manager of the Marine Division and vice president of the firm. Culbert, a professional engineer, has over 10 years of marine construction industry experience. The manager of the Land Division is Ed Doern, a construction management graduate of Oregon State University and 25-year veteran in the pile foundation industry. The Land Division will carry out all of the company's foundation piling and shoring work. Peter Stephens is the manager of the Equipment Division. He is a professional engineer with nearly 20 years of experience in management and maintenance of heavy machinery. The Equipment Division is responsible for the company's equipment and its crane service and leasing jobs.

Paladin Data Systems

A Poulsbo company, Paladin Data Systems, has won the Kitsap Economic Futures Award from the Economic Development Council of Kitsap County. The company develops database management software for such companies as Starbucks and IBM. It was launched in 1994 by four former Navy civilian engineers and now has 58 employees and offices in Seattle, Spokane and Salt Lake City in addition to Poulsbo.

NBBJ

Dennis Forsyth and Susan Jones have been named partners at NBBJ. Leigh Sutphin, Anne Cunningham and David Yuan were named West Coast principals. Forsyth earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Iowa State University and worked for Caudille Rowlett Scott, Inc. (CRS) prior to joining NBBJ in 1977. In the Seattle area, Forsyth's project leadership experience includes the KeyArena renovation, King County Correctional Facility, US Navy Family Support Complex and the new University of Washington Bothell/Cascadia Community College campus. He also has managed one of the firm's architecture studios for the past 10 years, and is currently project manager for Safeco Field and Seattle's new Municipal Courthouse. Jones joined NBBJ in 1990 after completing her Masters degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and her undergraduate degree at Stanford. She worked in multiple national and international offices, including the office of Boris Podrecca in Vienna, prior to joining NBBJ. Her work has won several national design awards, including the 1994 National AIA Honor Award for Interiors for the Seafirst Gallery with NBBJ, and a 1995 National AIA design award for her pro bono work on St. James Cathedral's Marian Chapel. Published nationally and internationally, she won a Fulbright Grant in 1994, and spent a year in Berlin, researching building tectonics. Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington since 1991, she teaches graduate design studios, seminars and lecture courses. With NBBJ since 1967, Sutphin has managed some of the firm's largest healthcare and justice projects, including Stafford Creek Correction Center, Veterans Administration Hospital, Swedish Medical Center's Southeast Tower and Stanford University Hospital. Cunningham, a designer and planner, joined NBBJ in 1991 after four years with Wyatt Stapper Architects and has worked with clients in a broad range of industries. Her clients include Arthur Andersen, Simpson Investment and Lasher Holzaphel. At NBBJ, Yuan is known for taking a project through every phase, from earliest concept to completion. Yuan most recently worked as NBBJ's project manager for Pacific Place and is currently leading renovation efforts on the former Nordstrom store. NBBJ has also announced staff promotions to senior associate and associate, and recognized several individuals with company awards at a recent banquet at the Columbia Tower Club. Promoted to senior associate were: John Adkins, Martha Boes, Dave Burger, Rosemary Carraher, Jim Fair, Grant Gustafson, Jeanne Iannucci, Jill Jago, Diane Lasko, Patrick O'Hare, Jin Ah Park, Pola Piper, Leo Raymundo, Jonathan Ward and Jerry Yin. NBBJ's Telenor, Norway project team -- Rob Anderson, Duncan Griffin, Kelly Griffin, Bill Nichols, Jin Ah Park, Carsten Stinn and Jonathan Ward -- received the Partners'Award. Andris Lapins and Alec Vassiliadis are NBBJ's "Mentors of the Year."

Berger

Misty Philbin was named senior associate at The Berger Partnership. Her current projects include Seattle University's Law School, McCormick Woods Conference Center in Port Orchard, Amazon.com, Epiphany Parish and several residential projects that have been featured in regional house and garden publications. She joined the firm in 1992 with 12 years of experience, and became an associate in 1995. Judson Youell was recently promoted to associate. His current projects include Redmond Senior and Junior High Schools, Benaroya Research Center and Holy Disciples Parish, Puyallup. Jud joined the firm in 1991, with 10 years of design and landscape construction experience. He is a 1980 graduate of the University of Idaho. Guy Michaelsen was promoted to project manager. His recent projects include Pacific Place, Redmond Town Center REI, 700 Olive (Nordstrom's new headquarters) and several high-end residential projects. Guy joined the firm in 1995, with two years of landscape design and construction management experience. He is a 1993 graduate of Washington State University. Peter Taylor was promoted to project manager. He has been with The Berger Partnership since 1994. Peter is currently serving as project manager for the Nordstrom Distribution Center in Maryland, Nordstrom Flatiron in Colorado, Pacific Science Center's IMAX theater and 3 Bellevue office tower, Bellevue. Jason Henry was recently promoted to project manager. He began his career with The Berger Partnership in 1996, after receiving a bachelor degree in landscape architecture from Washington State University. His projects include the Penrose Memorial Library at Whitman College in Walla Walla, The Inn at McCormick Woods in Port Orchard, Langley Cottages (additions to the Inn at Langley) in Langley, Columbia Winery in Redmond and a variety of residential projects. Jennifer Salazar recently became a member of the technical staff team. She provides AutoCAD and Microstation support for the Environmental Learning Center, located on Bainbridge Island, and Nordstrom projects nationwide. She joined the firm in 1996, with a master of landscape architecture degree from the University of Washington. Tia Rheaume joined the firm in November as an administrative assistant and receptionist. She recently moved to Seattle from New Hampshire, with a background in sales support, administrative support and social services. She has a bachelor of arts degree from Bates College.

FFA

Barbara Clement has been promoted to associate at Fletcher Farr Ayotte of Portland. She is a project manager, specializing in libraries and historic preservation projects, and is currently project manager for the rehabilitation of the historic state library in Salem and the rehabilitation of the historic Salem passenger rail depot.

Murase

Murase Associates has added five staff members to the Seattle office. Bill Bernstein is currently overseeing projects at King Street Station, Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Ferndale Middle School and four elementary schools for the Seattle School District. David Grant has returned to Seattle after three years in the firm's Portland office. Chris Peterson is working on the Civic Office Commons in Bellevue and the Auburn Commuter Rail Station. Joseph Fry is working on the Flatiron Crossing Mall and Village in Broomfield, Colo., the south Terminal Expasnion project at Sea-Tac International Airport and Wildwood Park in Puyallup. Rena Varona has joined the firm as marketing coordinator. She returns to Seattle after three years with a Los Angeles graphic design firm.
