Starting in January 2001, the University of Phoenix will introduce the use of the Microsoft Reader as its exclusive e-Book platform. The University is the first to use the Microsoft reading technology for educational purposes. Microsoft Reader is a software application designed to deliver an on-screen computer reading experience that approaches the quality of paper. Once the application is installed, e-Books will be available to purchase and download online from participating publishers.

Lee Marsh has been promoted to Grade VIII senior project manager at Berger/ABAM Engineers in Federal Way. He has experience in seismic research, planning and design, and construction management. His recent projects include the seismic upgrade design of the main terminal Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and a seismic upgrade project for the traffic control tower at Boeing Field.
Aaron Savage, who has been with the company's business development and communications group for more than three years, has been promoted to graphics manager.
The firm also promoted Jef Blake to applications programmer, level II. An employee since 1990, Blake works in the company's AutoCAD and information technology departments.
Mayer/Reed, a Portland landscape architectural firm, has hired Krishna Greenwood to provide technical support. She is working on the Portland Police Mounted Patrol relocation projects and Tri-Met's Interstate Max light rail extension to north Portland. Prior to joining Mayer/Reed, she was a landscape designer for Otak Inc. and Percival & Shapiro.
Steve Witter has also joined the firm. He is working with the firm's environmental graphics design group on Tri-Met's Interstate light rail extension, a multi-modal transportation facility in Everett, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He is also working on an exhibit for Hoffman Construction Company. Witter taught architectural graphics and design studio courses in the architecture department at Portland State University from 1996 to 1999.
Steve Robert Wente joins the firm's environmental graphics and visual communications group and is responsible for the design of signage systems and identity programs. His current projects include Tri-Met's light rail project, Portland International Airport's terminal expansion, and a signage master plan for the University of Puget Sound. He was project manager and primary creative designer at the firm of Douglas Gallagher in Washington, D.C.
Andy Barker, also a new environmental graphics designer, is working on the Tri-Met extension to the airport, print collateral projects, and in-house promotional materials. Prior to joining Mayer/Reed, he worked as a freelance production artist.
PAE Consulting Engineers, Inc., a Portland mechanical, electrical, telecommunications, and lighting design firm, has promoted staff members and hired three new employees.
Paul Schwer has been promoted to principal. In his new role, Schwer will assist with PAE's marketing efforts and continue in his role as project manager. His recent projects include Whitman College Lab, Ashland Library, Oregon State University Oceanography and various Washington State University projects in Vancouver.
Steve Reidy, who has been with the firm for six years, also has been promoted to principal. He is the project manager for Micron Fab Lab and Office Building and several projects for Alcatel.
Brian O'Gara joins PAE with 15 years of experience in telecommunications infrastructure sales, design and project management.
Bruce Irby is a recent graduate from Portland State University where he received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He is working on the intensive care unit of the Southwest Washington Medical Center.
Marc Brune, who recently graduated from the University of Portland with a degree in mechanical engineering, is working on a project at Whitman College and the Hikade Dental Building.
Baylis Architects of Bellevue has hired several new employees.Monika Leutenegger, a recent graduate from the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz, Germany, has joined the firm as an intern. She is working on the Bellevue Overlake Office and Redmond 85th Street office projects.
Christine Hatcher, a Texas A&M graduate with a background is in historic preservation, also has joined the firm as an intern. She also is currently working on the Redmond 85th Street Office project.
Bree Carey returns to Baylis Architects as graphic designer. Grace Suryani, a recent architectural graduate from Catholic University of Farahyangan, Indonesia, has joined the firm as an intern. She is working on the Bellevue Overlake office building, a mixed-use project in Kirkland, and a Barnes & Noble store in Spokane.
Wendy Lee has been hired as an interior designer. She is working on a Holiday Inn in Issaquah.
Tina Boyd has been hired as office manager. Before working for Baylis, she worked in the utilities industry and for a Seattle law firm.
Robert Lloyd has two years experience in urban design. Prior to his arrival at Hewitt Architects, Lloyd established his own design firm, focusing on sustainable, urban infill residential projects. Lloyd will receive his master of landscape architecture degree at the University of Washington in December.
Matthew Porteous has four years experience in landscape architecture. He specializes in institutional master planning and in urban design.
Wiphat Yoosuphab has six years experience in architecture. He is experienced in mixed-use residential, commercial and hospitality building types. He is working on The Village at Overlake, a transit oriented development that will combine residential, parking and transit use at King County Metro's park-and-ride in Overlake.
M. Reza Agahian has been promoted to principal at McLellan & Copenhagen LLC, a Seattle firm specializing in scientific laboratory design. He has more than 11 years experience with the company in the planning, design and construction administration of scientific research and teaching facilities. His current projects include the University of California's Riverside Physical Science Building and the University of British Columbia's Michael Smith Building Vancouver.
Mark Osborn, who has 20 years of professional experience, has been promoted to associate principal. His projects include Millennium Pharmaceuticals' genomic research building in Cambridge, Mass., and the National Marine Fisheries Service Honolulu laboratory renewal project in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Michele Brittany, who has been with the firm for one year, has been promoted to business development. She is managing the marketing department.
Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects has hired 10 new employees, which expands the Seattle-based firm's staff to a total of 67.
