Elliott Bay Design Group

Elliott Bay Design Group has appointed Charlie Bills to the position of staff operations manager for the naval architecture and marine engineering company based in Seattle. Bills will be responsible for planning and managing the efforts of the company's staff working in support of its project managers. He has 30 years of maritime experience including positions as deputy commander and base executive officer at San Juan and Puerto Rico.

Western Washington University

The Society of Automotive Engineers has awarded Michael Seal, founder and director of the Vehicle Research Institute (VRI) at Western Washington University, its Excellence in Engineering Education Award. Seal was honored for his outstanding contributions made to Engineering Education Board activities. The VRI has been producing experimental vehicles since 1974.

University Mechanical

Patrick Fay, a professional engineer, has joined University Mechanical Contractors as a project manager. Fay has a broad background in mechanical projects in the Seattle area. University Mechanical is one of the largest design-build mechanical contractors in the state, specializing in piping, plumbing and ductwork for commercial and industrial projects.

Heery International has made several promotions in its Seattle-area Program Management Group. Included are: T.J. "Mac" McClellan and David E. Werner to senior associates, and Douglas I. Callison

Callison Architecture has appointed Steve Epple as its new chief operating officer and board member. In his new position, Epple will be responsible for the firm’s operations areas, overseeing financial, office management, human resources, marketing and information services. Epple has been a principal of Callison since joining in 1996 and has served on the firm’s Executive Committee and as director of operations for the retail centers studio. Epple holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design and Architecture from Ball State University and a Master of Business Administration from UCLA. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Callison has also named seven new principals. Martin R. Anderson is an award-winning architect who has spent his career focused on specialty store design, working with many national and international retail and entertainment leaders. Anderson is a marketing lead for store projects in the Asia Pacific market and serves on Callison’s Design Awards Committee. Prior to joining Callison in 1999, he served as creative director of the Florida-based Pavlik Design Team and is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.

Dawn A. Clark leads Callison's international department store management and design teams. Since her return to Callison in 1997, she has served as senior project and client manager for Seibu Department Stores in Japan, Korean store projects and most recently, Harrods of London. Clark originally joined Callison in 1987, managing new Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom’s nationwide remodel program. Clark has a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Janet Paden Faulkner is a specialist in the design of health care environments. Her responsibilities have included project management and design for some of the firm’s largest health care clients including the Sisters of Providence Health System and St. Charles Medical Center. She joined Callison in 1988. She received a BA from North Texas State University and is a registered architect.

William F. Gartz has been focusing on the management of national and international hotel and resort design projects for the last 16 years. He has worked with many of the major operators, including Starwood, Westin, Sheraton, Radisson, and Holiday Inn, as well as resort developers such as Intrawest and Raintree Resorts International. He is managing the design of a new Village for the Mammoth Mountain resort that includes three new residential buildings. Gartz is a member of the American Resort Development Association (ARDA). He earned his B.A. in Environmental Design from the University of Washington and a Master’s of Architecture from the University of Wisconsin.

Since joining Callison, Paul Makowicki has been responsible for management of many of the firm’s large-scale retail centers projects and leads the firm’s efforts in continuous improvement of the project delivery process for international projects. His projects have included delivering the 3.3-million-square-foot Grand Gateway mixed-use project in Shanghai, China, and SkyMart Shops at the Hong Kong International Airport. Makowicki joined Callison in April 1994 from Mahlum & Nordfors in Seattle. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University.

Caryl Thornton Sherpa is a senior project manager with many years of experience focused on interiors projects for a diversity of clients. Since joining Callison, Sherpa has completed projects for Northern Trust, REI Corporate Offices and HQ Worldwide (formerly Vantas). She is currently managing two projects for the law firm of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, LLP, a 48,000-square-foot expansion in Menlo Park, Calif., and the other in Seattle. Active in the community, she is Board President of Environmental Works, a community design center, and is a member of the Corporate Council for the Arts.

Since joining Callison 15 years ago, Erie O. Stone has focused on retail project delivery, with overall project management for Nordstrom’s nationwide remodel program. With his leadership in team coordination and project quality, Stone provides oversight for every project detail and operations of the Nordstrom remodel team. He has a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University.

Otak

Otak announces the addition of Ron Jee and Jeff Parker to their bridge and structures engineering team. Jee is a professional engineer with 28 years of experience in managing, engineering, designing and inspecting structural projects for transportation facilities throughout the West. Jee will be responsible for project management and oversight for bridge and structures projects. Parker has more than 10 years of consulting engineering experience specializing in the design and inspection of transportation and building structural projects. He will be responsible for design and contract documents for transportation and structural projects. He is currently working on the new Wheatland Ferry Ramp and Pole Improvement project in Marion County, Ore., and the Walluski River Bridges project in Clatsop County, Ore.

Kennedy/Jenks

Kennedy/Jenks Consultants announced that David L. Parry has joined the firm as Northwest Region Public Works practice leader. Parry assumes responsibility for growing the firm's municipal service practice in the Northwest. He will be based in the Seattle office and work with municipal services staff in the Federal Way, Seattle and Portland offices to expand Kennedy Jenks's presence in the water/wastewater market in the Northwest. He has more than 20 years experience in the program management, facility planning, design and construction management of wastewater treatment, solids processing and distributed power facilities.

Van Horne

Andrew Wisdom has joined the staff of Van Horne & Van Horne Architects as a designer. Wisdom has eight years experience in architecture, plus a seven-year degree background in construction and residential design. He is working on Monument Park in Lewis County, and on various residential projects around Puget Sound. Van Horne & Van Horne Architects is also currently designing a new studio for Pottery Northwest at Sand Point, and the International Seaplane Base in Renton.
