Phase two of the million-dollar renovation of the tea court and lobby in Portland's Heathman Hotel's has been recently completed. Renovations included replacing the reception desk with three guest-relations consoles and extending the Art Deco style from the tea court throughout the lobby. Med Rutherford of the San Francisco-based firm ERS Hospitality was designer and purchaser on this project. The Heathman is located in Portland's downtown cultural district.

The single-largest user of office space in the nation will tell how it operates in the Northwest at Commercial Real Estate Women's next lunch gathering, scheduled for Thursday, April 11. The General Service Administration's regional manager, Patrick Clark, will speak at the event, starting at noon at the Washington Athletic Club in downtown Seattle. Clark's region covers Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska. He oversees 16 million square feet of leased or owned federal space. His talk will cover surplus properties, architecture and building security.
Up after that, CREW will take a tour of Chicago Title Insurance Co.'s downtown Seattle offices, sometimes called the company's "title plant." Chicago Title's Mike Beckman will show what happens when one orders those costly title reports.

Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire announced the expansion of its ownership group through the addition of six individuals: John Hooper, Don Davies, Shelley Clark, Terry Palmer, Jay Taylor and Drew Gangnes.
Hooper is Skilling’s director of earthquake engineering, currently involved with the seismic aspects of the Harborview Bond Project, McCaw Oliver Hall Renovation and the Snohomish campus redevelopment initiative. He is one of four structural engineers in the nation with voting authority for the new 2000 International Building Code.
Davies leads Skilling’s hotel/hospitality group, which has been responsible for more than 20 hotel projects in the last six years. Current work includes the Chicago Courtyard by Marriott, the Meydenbauer Center hotel in Bellevue and the Hilton Grand Vacations Club Waikiki Tower in Hawaii.
Shelley Clark, head of Skilling’s retail/entertainment group, is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers and a guest lecturer on retail engineering at the U.W. graduate level. Her current retail projects include on-going expansion projects at University Village and Anaheim Garden Walk in California.
Terry Palmer leads Skilling’s aviation group, with recent projects including expansion of San Jose International Airport and a new Northwest Airlines Hangar at Sea-Tac. Palmer is currently involved in several blast analysis projects, addressing issues of improved security for aviation and other facilities.
Jay Taylor directs Skilling’s museum and library groups. He is currently working with Rem Koolhaas on the new Seattle Central Library and Arthur Erickson on the Museum of Glass in Tacoma.
Drew Gangnes is Skilling’s director of civil engineering, managing a group that specializes in civil engineering in support of architectural facility design. Gangnes is overseeing the civil design of SAM’s new Olympic Sculpture Park, the Seattle Central Library and the Harborview Bond Project.
NewsBriefs:Parametrix recently hired senior hydrogeologist Richard Roché. He will be responsible for both project execution and business development in the Portland area. The addition of Roché increases the waste management and environmental capabilities in the Portland office.
Roché brings 16 years of experience in the Portland and southwest Washington region managing site investigation, remediation, risk assessment, regulatory compliance and brownfields projects. He spent the past 13 years with Century West Engineering where he was a senior project manager and environmental group manager. Roché was also an environmental scientist for the U.S. Geological Survey prior to his work in the A/E industry. Current project work includes site investigation and remediation for the Port of Vancouver as well as regulatory compliance management for Crown Pacific.
MulvannyG2 Architecture recently promoted Carla Thompson to vice president, director of marketing.
Thompson joined the firm in September 2000 as a principal and corporate marketing director and has been instrumental in helping build MulvannyG2's brand identity and communicate the firm's enhanced capabilities. She's responsible for corporate-wide strategic planning, budgeting, communications and public relations. Thompson has 22 years of A/E marketing experience, with 14 of those years at Hart Crowser where she was a senior associate and the director of marketing.
She has been an active member of the SMPS since 1980, and has served as chapter president, regional director, national board member and chair of several national committees. In 1997, she was named Marketer of the Year, the top honor bestowed by the Seattle Chapter of SMPS.
MulvannyG2 also recently promoted Wayne Miller to principal and Michele King to director of finance. Miller is in charge of MulvannyG2’s roll-out retail studio and is the national manager for the firm’s Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse projects. He is also the client manager for several national retailers, including Big 5 Sporting Goods and RiteAid.
Miller joined MulvannyG2 in 1997 as a project manager and has more than 20 years of architectural experience.
King oversees the firm’s accounting department. She is also responsible for financial reporting; tax preparation; budgeting; and coordination with the firm’s retail, office, industrial, interiors and international studio leaders. King has more than 18 years of financial experience and is a certified public accountant.
NewsBriefs:White Shield recently added Ronald Hicks to the firm's Kennewick corporate office. Hicks will develop new business and manage environmental projects throughout the United States. Hicks has been involved in over 200 projects worldwide. He has provided technical support and project management as well as regulatory and litigation support. He has helped develop and implement passive, low cost approaches to site closure such as natural attenuation and risked-based corrective action.

Washington State University's School of Music and Theatre received a $625,000 award from The Allen Foundation for Music. The money will be used to complete a newly designed recording studio in the Kimbrough Music Building. An existing position in the school is earmarked for a recording engineer and an endowment fund for equipment and facility maintenance will be established with a portion of the funds received from The Allen Foundation for Music.

The Seattle Chapter of Society for Marketing Professional Services has appointed Grace Vigil as treasurer. Her responsibilities will include improving the chapter’s financial activity as a member of the board of directors. She will also work with the board of directors to find ways to increase revenue and decrease spending, while maintaining current programs and services.
Vigil has four years experience in the A/E/C industry and is employed as a marketing coordinator at Reid Middleton. She served on SMPS’s Education and Networking Committees.
The Seattle chapter of SMPS is one of the oldest in the United States, with approximately 220 members.
The Glosten Associates, a Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm, has promoted David Gray to principal and Justin Morgan to senior associate.
Gray received his masters of science degree in ocean engineering from the University of Washington and has been with Glosten since 1984. His expertise includes hydrodynamics, naval architecture, probabilistic analysis and climatology. Gray has led the firm’s work in maneuvering simulation for safety assessments of ports and harbors with respect to the transport of oil by ship. He also led the development of Glosten’s Shipboard Stability Program and Glosten’s Tug Master program for education and training in the handling of high-powered tugs used in escort and ship assist work. He manages Glosten’s Ocean Engineering & Analysis group.
Morgan has received his bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from New York’s Webb Institute and has been with Glosten since 1992. As a senior naval architect, he performs structural design and analysis for both new construction and refit projects involving vessels of all types. Morgan has extensive operating and programming experience on various computer platforms, and recently upgraded Glosten’s shipboard stability program to Windows. He is the project naval architect for design of a new arctic research vessel.
David Evans and Associates announced that Erik Sweet has received his Washington state landscape architecture registration.
Sweet has eight years of experience and holds a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Washington State University. His training includes landscape architecture, computer technologies and environmental studies and restoration. His professional background includes landscape, athletic field, synthetic turf and irrigation design. He is experienced in assisting school districts, youth organizations, private developers and cities and municipalities in the creation of landscape designs.
GeoEngineers recently promoted Dave Cook to associate in its Seattle office. Cook has 10 years experience at GeoEngineers and currently manages the Seattle office. He specializes in environmental site assessment, remediation and geologic hazard consulting services throughout the western U.S.
Cook’s current work involves site investigations and remediation for developers, attorneys, ports, automobile facilities, airports and other industrial clients.
