FSi Consulting Engineers and the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers announced Shawn Bliss is the first recipient of the Richard L. Temkin Fire Protection Engineering Scholarship. Bliss is a student at the University of Ulster, Ireland, where she is currently working toward a master's in fire safety engineering.
Richard Temkin was a principal and fire protection engineer at FSi consulting engineers for over 12 years until his unexpected death in October 2002. The scholarship promotes the interest and education of engineers who want to increase their knowledge about fire protection and life safety practices.
Bliss will be participating in distance-learning studies followed by intensive "block release" learning periods at the University of Ulster. Her educational focus will be centered on life/safety requirements and the understanding of fire dynamics, detection, suppression, material fire-resistivity and human behavior in an effort to make buildings safer environments.
