MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions has become one of only two companies in Washington state to have multiple sites recognized in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), with its Everett location recently earning Star status alongside its Seattle prefabrication shop. The Everett site is located at 11512 Airport Road, Suite F-700, and the Seattle shop is at 3701 S. Norfolk St. The VPP is a way for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health to recognize and partner with businesses and worksites that show excellence in occupational safety and health. Sites are committed to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of OSHA standards. VPP participants develop and implement systems to effectively identify, evaluate, prevent and control occupational hazards to prevent employee injuries and illnesses. The VPP in Washington state is an occupational safety and health initiative managed by the state Department of Labor & Industries. It is part of a broader effort to promote workplace safety through proactive measures and a cooperative partnership between government, management and labor. The VPP recognizes employers and workers who have implemented effective safety and health management systems. MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions specializes in design-build HVAC, plumbing, energy services and building automation systems.

Axis Architecture

AXIS Architecture + Design has promoted Andrew Kluess to principal at the firm's Seattle studio.

Kluess is recognized as one of the Pacific Northwest's most practiced and knowledgeable multi-family residential architectural designers. He has 25 years of architectural design experience, including a combined 14 years with AXIS and its Seattle office prior to its amalgamation with AXIS.

Kluess brings to AXIS a unique appreciation for what makes a project successful by way of his significant client-side owner's representative experience prior to joining the Seattle office.

As one of his first mandates as principal, Kluess will co-lead the continued growth of AXIS' multi-family residential design practice, with particular focus on further establishing AXIS' position as West Coast leaders in affordable housing community design. He joins founding principal architect Radim Blazej leading the Seattle office.

In his new role, Kluess will continue to operate as one of the company's multi-family residential design experts, overseeing projects across the firm and along the entire West Coast.

Contour Engineering, LLC, a leading engineering consulting firm specializing in comprehensive land development services throughout Washington state, recently announced the promotion of Mike Goularte to partner.

Goularte brings more than 12 years of engineering expertise to his promotion, playing a pivotal role in executing the company's strategic plan and mission. As one of the firm's principal project engineers, he collaborates in managing the civil engineering department, overseeing the design, construction, and ongoing management of land and site development projects, including sewer systems, stormwater management, utility engineering, and water systems. His leadership will drive growth and operational excellence across all facets of Contour Engineering.

Goularte has enjoyed supporting team members in developing and growing within the company. Land Morphology has hired Ryan Shubin as principal. Shubin brings over 18 years of experience in landscape architecture across North America and Asia.

As a Singapore-accredited Landscape Architect, he has led projects ranging from private gardens and urban plazas to waterfront parks and large-scale hydrologic plans. Among his notable work is leading the design and project management of the award-winning Lakeside Garden at Jurong Lake Gardens, a 130-acre National Garden in Singapore. He also led the landscape design for the Gallop Extension and the new Tropical Montane Orchidetum at the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Tacoma-based building envelope consulting firm NEXUS has hired Ian Cummings as a building envelope designer and Ryan Tupper as a building envelope specialist.

Cummings obtained his B.S. in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2015 and has more than 10 years of experience in the architecture and building envelope industry. At NEXUS, he is responsible for envelope design, independent technical reviews, performing construction administration, installation observations, and project management.

Tupper has been reviewing and testing envelope components for more than 17 years. As a consultant, he has provided building assessments, forensic investigations, construction administration, installation observations, and testing services on new and existing buildings. At NEXUS, he will continue to provide construction services with an emphasis on site observations and construction administration.

Parametrix

Joe Foote has joined Parametrix as a principal consultant. He has over 25 years of experience working on a broad range of planning, design, and construction projects with a focus on public water, wastewater, and stormwater projects.

Foote comes to Parametrix from Consor where he served as a principal engineer. His expertise includes water system planning and design, pumping system design, and standards development. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Water Works Association, and Project Management Institute.

At Parametrix, he joins the firm's water practice, providing water and wastewater engineering and design services to public agencies across the Northwest.

Barghausen Consulting Engineers, Inc. recently hired four new employees at its Kent location and one employee at its Klamath Falls, Oregon, location.

Weston Vaughn, design engineer, started in the Kent office on July 8. He graduated from Gonzaga University in May of 2024 with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. He has previous work experience as a survey crew member and construction inspector at AKS Engineering & Forestry.

Tanner Machala started as an assistant planner in the Kent office also on July 8. He graduated with a Master of Urban Planning from the University of Washington in 2024. Machala previously worked as a land use planner at Atwell, LLC. His skills include land use permitting, project management, and narrative writing.

Parker Bodily started as a project planner working remotely based out of Barghausen's Kent office on July 10. He holds a Master of Science in Bioregional Planning & Community Design from the University of Idaho. Parker recently worked as a senior planner for the city of Nampa, Idaho. He has knowledge of planning theories from urban to rural areas, and experience working with small towns in Idaho to create working planning documents.

Kena Poach started as an assistant planner working remotely based out of Barghausen's Kent office on July 29. She received a Building Inspector – Associate of Applied Sciences degree from Chemeketa Community College. Poach previously worked as an associate planner for the city of Nampa, Idaho. She has expertise in land development and construction.

Erik Nobel started as a senior planner in the Klamath Falls office on July 1. He graduated from Oregon State University with a B.S. degree in Rangeland Resources. Nobel previously worked as a planning manager for the city of Klamath Falls and as a 7th-grade math teacher at Klamath County School District.

Ferguson Architecture (FA) has promoted Jamie Sandberg to principal and director of operations. Since joining FA as the firm's second employee in 2015, Sandberg has been instrumental in shaping the firm's workplace culture and building Ferguson's hospitality, workplace, and multifamily portfolio.

In her elevated role, Sandberg will provide design oversight and leadership on all FA projects.

FA has also hired Melissa Nordquist as a senior project designer. Nordquist has over 24 years of high-end custom residential design experience, including project features in Dwell Magazine and Luxe Interiors + Design.

Parametrix has named Carrie Cupler vice president of accounting and finance. She previously served as director of accounting and finance and has over 30 years of experience. As vice president, Cupler will lead the firm's commercial, accounting, and finance teams and serve on the firm's Functional Integration Team.

Cupler joined Parametrix in 2009 as a staff accountant and in 2013 was promoted to controller. She holds a finance degree from Gonzaga University and an accounting degree from the University of Washington.

Muhannad Alzeir has joined Parametrix as a senior intelligent transportation systems (ITS) engineer. He has nearly a decade of experience specializing in signals, illumination, and ITS design.

Alzeir comes to Parametrix from HNTB where he worked on projects for municipalities, counties, and departments of transportation.

At Parametrix, Alzeir joins the firm's Smart & Livable Communities practice, which helps clients plan, design, and implement emerging technology solutions that enhance livability, sustainability, safety, and equity within their communities. He will lead the design and implementation of several connected vehicle and infrastructure projects using C-V2X technologies.

PLS Engineering in Vancouver has added an intern to the team. Joining PLS is Alexander (Zander) French from Kennewick. Recently graduated in June, his career path includes the possible goal of becoming a civil engineer.
