Andrew Bergh: Police chief's slander costs town $400,000

You can thank James DeVita for today's lesson in Defamation 101.

DeVita is the former police chief of Owego, a village in Tioga County, N.Y., with approximately 4,000 inhabitants. He formerly patronized a local restaurant owned by two friends, Michael Yammine and Hassid Kazan. They emigrated from Lebanon with their families and eventually became U.S. citizens, and have called Owego their home for more than 20 years.
