Alvin Binuya is returning to Ponti restaurant as chef/owner. Binuya was chef in the Ponti kitchen when the restaurant opened in 1990. Binuya was the owner and chef at Madoka on Bainbridge Island, which opened in 2005 and closed in September. Ponti is also owned by Richard and Sharon Malia. It will offer a new menu in early 2010.
More than 500 volunteers are needed to prepare tax returns throughout King County for United Way of King County's Free Tax Preparation Campaign. The program will help low and middle-income families prepare their income tax forms from July 12 to April 15, 2010. All volunteers will receive free tax preparation training and be certified by the IRS. The need for volunteers is especially high in Auburn, Federal Way, SeaTac, Rainier Beach and downtown Seattle. People who speak Spanish, Chinese or Russian are especially needed.

Jessie Harris, an attorney with Seattle law firm Williams Kastner, has been appointed chair of the American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section's Self-Insurers and Risk Managers Committee. He will serve a one-year term during the 2009-2010 bar year. Harris' practice involves civil litigation, employment and discrimination, and insurance and commercial matters.
Sturtevant's in Bellevue has opened a new Sturtevant's Ski Mart store in Tacoma at 2220 S. 37th Street. Keith Rollins, former manager of the Puyallup store, will manage the new location. The Ski Mart features new, in-season products and discounted, close-out products from previous seasons.
Virginia Mason Medical Center hired five new physicians in a variety of specialties in August. They are Amy Cheng and Simone Ince in dermatology, Nkeiruka Duze in general internal medicine, Amy Brockmeyer in gynecologic oncology and Benjamin Jackson in pediatrics.

Bellevue's Solstice Restaurant Group hired Shawn Lee as general manager of 0/8 Seafood Grill & Twisted Cork Wine Bar and Ellie Chin as general manager of STIR/Martini + Raw Bar. Lee has 20 years of experience, has owned a sushi distribution company and been food and beverage director for Sheraton and Hilton Hotels. Chin is a restaurateur and previously launched Ovio Bistro and O2 in West Seattle and Market Street Bistro in Ballard.
Silicon Mechanics, a manufacturer of rackmount servers, storage and computing hardware in Bothell, promoted Eva Cherry to president. Cherry joined Silicon Mechanics in April of 2008 as vice president of operations. She was previously chief executive officer of Net-Inspect.
Bellingham-based Alpha Technologies Services has acquired ASC Electronics, a telecommunications equipment repair service company in Aiken, S.C. The goal is to help Alpha better serve customers in the Southeastern market and reduce turnaround time on equipment repairs.
