Perkins Coie said Steve Hedberg has rejoined the firm as chief operating officer. Hedberg was executive vice president and COO at Aequitas Capital Management, and was a partner at Perkins Coie for more than two decades. He has 30 years of experience with his insolvency practice, and also served on Perkins Coie's management and executive committees. He will oversee the business operations of the firm, which has more than 900 lawyers in 19 offices in the U.S. and Asia.

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance hired two hematologists. Dr. David A. Garcia is a specialist in treating thrombosis and blood disorders, and will also serve as professor of hematology in the Department of Medicine /Hematology and associate medical director for antithrombotic therapy at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Stephen Douglas Smith joins as a medical oncologist treating patients with lymphoma and is also an associate professor in the UW School of Medicine.

Tom McCabe, former head of the Building Industry Association of Washington, has been named CEO of Freedom Foundation, an Olympia-based free-market think tank. He will replace Jonathan Bechtle, who left in September to become COO of the Foundation for Government Accountability in Naples, Fla.

WorkForce Central said four business leaders were appointed to the Tacoma-Pierce County Workforce Development Council, one of 12 in Washington state that addresses workforce development needs through public and private partnerships. The new WDC members are Louis Cooper, senior director security and labor relations at the Port of Tacoma; Scott Haas, talent acquisition manager at NW ThyssenKrupp Aerospace USA; John Rader, director of operations at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters; and Barry Ray, senior vice-president and controller at Columbia Bank.

City of Tacoma

Tacoma City Manager T.C. Broadnax named Kurtis Kingsolver to be Public Works director and Peter Huffman to be Planning & Development Services director. Both were serving on an interim basis. Kingsolver joined the city as a civil engineer in 1990, and has served as traffic engineer and city engineer, working on large capital projects such as Murray Morgan Bridge, Pacific Avenue streetscape, Stadium Way arterial and Hylebos Bridge. Huffman has worked on the comprehensive plan, land use codes, and improving permitting services, zoning standards and customer service.

Pilchuck Glass School

Collectors, philanthropists and artists raised $1.2 million at the 35th Annual Pilchuck Glass School auction at The Westin Seattle in October. Proceeds from the event will benefit glass education and artist residencies.
