Judge David Svaren will be sworn in Friday as Skagit County Superior Court judge. He has served as District Court judge for 17 years as well as presiding over municipal courts in Anacortes, Burlington and Mount Vernon. Svaren also was in private practice as a partner with Twede and Svaren in Burlington.
Four Washington State University faculty have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Wei Hong (Katie) Zhong in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at WSU Pullman, Markus Flury in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at WSU Puyallup, Susmita Bose in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at WSU Pullman and Kelly A. Brayton in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology and the Allen School for Global Animal Health at WSU Pullman.

Lane Powell said Counsel to the Firm Julie H. Seidenstein was named the King County Washington Women Lawyers Chapter 2016 Volunteer of the Year. Seidenstein is an active volunteer at Mary's Place, which supports homeless women and families.
Seattle Public Theater is making some leadership changes. After 16 years as artistic and education director, Shana Bestock is leaving. Associate Artistic Director Kelly Kitchens will be interim artistic director and Charlotte Tiencken is the new interim executive director.

Taylor Washburn, a Lane Powell attorney in the Litigation Practice Group, has been admitted to the Washington State Bar. Washburn focuses his practice on securities and corporate governance litigation, and investigations by the SEC, FINRA and state regulators.
Washington Newspaper Publishers Association said Kris Passey, publisher of the Marysville Globe and Arlington Times in the 1990s, has pancreatic cancer and is not expected to live more than a few months. He is a former WNPA board member and taught at Western Washington University. WNPA is raising funds for an internship to honor him, and the Washington Coalition for Open Government is presenting him with the 2017 James Madison Award for his work on open records and meetings. Portland's Broth Bar has opened a second location in Olympia's new food hall: 222 Market. Bone broth is considered a traditional healing remedy. Broth Bar owners Tressa and Katie Yellig said they have gotten requests to open broth bars in other cities, and are looking at expansion. 222 Market will also have an oyster bar, bakery, distillery, florist, gelateria, grocery and cooking school.
Bellevue Arts Museum said Kemper Freeman of Kemper Development Co. is making two significant gifts to launch fundraising for updating the museum: $1 million for capital expenditures and $1 million to match other donations. The goal is to make external and internal upgrades to the museum, which was designed by Stephen Holl.
