Janay Collins joined the staff of WNPA as advertising director. She will assist with the annual convention and Better Newspaper Contest. She has worked at Microsoft as a research manager and at the Port Townsend Leader managing special promotions.
About 800 people helped Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County raise more than $690,000 at Habitat's 2017 “Beyond the Build” Luncheon on March 14 in Seattle. Funds will go toward home ownership, repairs and community programs. Volunteer Bob Moore won the Community Leadership Award for his long history with Habitat.

SMH has hired Joshua Nelson as chief technology officer, which is a new position. He will oversee tech investments such as the electronic medical record system myAvatar from Netsmart Technologies. Nelson has tech experience at Carney Badley Spellman, Perkins Coie, Swedish Medical Center and the University of Washington. The nonprofit SMH provides mental health and related services in King County.
Gov. Jay Inslee has appointed Olympia resident Dr. Alan Burke to the State Board of Education. Burke has served in public education for more than 40 years, including state-level education policy. He fills Position 5 on the 16-member board.

Madrona Venture Group, an early-stage venture capital firm, said Maria Karaivanova is joining as a principal focused on new investment opportunities, and Alice Ryder is joining as director of investor relations and business development. Karaivanova has nearly a decade of tech experience at Cloudflare, Intel and Boeing. Ryder was most recently VP of investor relations at King Digital Entertainment, the maker of Candy Crush, and also worked for Clearwire, Expedia and Nextel Partners.
Nancy Swanger, associate dean and director of the Washington State University School of Hospitality Management and an associate professor with the Carson College of Business, is the new faculty athletic representative. Swanger succeeds Agricultural Economics Professor Ken Casavant, who has held the position since 1999.

Cairncross and Hempelmann said Ryan D. White and Jennifer K. Faubion have been named principals. White's practice is focused on real estate transactions, including representing developers, lenders and public-sector clients. Faubion provides litigation services and dispute resolution assistance, including for receiverships and commercial bankruptcies.
Puget Sound Bank said Suzanne B. Santora joined the company as vice president, human resources manager.
