Sun Gro Horticulture Inc., a Bellevue-based producer of professional growing mixes, has promoted Buddy Sliva from manager to marketing manager. Sliva has been with Sun Gro Horticulture for nearly four years. He previously worked on the retail and wholesale side of the lawn and garden business for Ernst Home Centers, Central Garden Supply and Weyerhaeuser.
William Bynum has been appointed associate vice president with Dean Witter Reynolds Inc., in their Seattle office.
Dixie Hawkins has joined Lynnwood-headquartered communications agency Ashenbrenner Marketing Inc., as associate. Hawkins previously was marketing communications manager for Aardvark Corp., a manufacturing firm located in Puyallup. Her prior agency experience includes serving as public relations account supervisor for Tycer Fultz Bellack in Seattle and manager of public relations for Bozell in Houston.
Seattle-based Restaurants Unlimited's self-service marketplace eatery concept Zoopa has signed leases for new locations in Tacoma and North Seattle. A new $1.4 million, 8,000-square-foot location will open at Tacoma Place in mid-December, with the $1.45 million, 6,700-square-foot North Seattle location just off I-5 at Ballinger Way, the company's first free-standing restaurant, set for a mid-February 1996 opening. Restaurants Unlimited, which operates 25 restaurants in six states and over 300 company-owned and franchised bakeries in the United States, Canada and Mexico, is also negotiating for additional Zoopa sites at Northgate, Redmond and Federal Way. Two more Zoopas are expected to open by the end of 1996.

SEATTLE (PRN) -- Seattle-headquartered fashion specialty retailer Nordstrom has announced the appointment of Vice President Darrel Hume as the general manager for the company's first Texas store at the Dallas Galleria. Hume was most recently the vice president and corporate merchandise manager for Men's Sportswear. He will now manage all operations for the 225,000 square foot Dallas Galleria store, scheduled to open March 22, 1996. Hume began his career with the company in 1969 as a salesperson in men's apparel. He has held a variety of management positions including buyer, merchandise manager, store manager and general manager. Nordstrom currently operates 78 stores in 15 states. The company's sales in 1994 were $3.9 billion.
Long-time Seattle educator Ammon McWashington has received the Washington State University Alumni Achievement Award for his "outstanding contributions and dedication to the recruitment of minorities into higher education and for continued leadership in WSU's African American Alumni Alliance." McWashington began his teaching career in 1969 at Foster High School near Tukwila, where he also was head football coach and an assistant coach in basketball, baseball and wrestling. McWashington joined the ranks of education administration as vice principal of Seattle's Cleveland High in 1974, and at the age of 32, became one of the youngest school principals ever appointed in the Seattle School District when he took the top leadership position at Garfield High School in 1977. Last fall, he returned to Garfield as principal, the same post he held earlier for 11 years. He left the Seattle Central area school in 1988 for a three-year stint as principal at Ingraham High, across town, and then served as director of high schools for the Seattle School District for three years. McWashington is a past president of the Seattle Principals Association, a member of the Black Educators Association and past representative for Seattle on the Washington Association of Secondary School Board.

FDSI, a regional information technology (IT) contract services firm based in Bellevue, has hired Aimee Cook as an account manager, responsible for expanding the company's presence in the south Puget Sound Area, including Tacoma and Federal Way. Previously, Cook was local branch manager for national contract services firm CTG.
Kim Tilander has been named manager of First Mutual Savings Bank's Monroe branch. Tilander was formerly a personal banker and licensed investment representative for Seafirst Bank, where she received awards as a top seller for two consecutive years. Prior to that, she was a branch manager at Security Pacific Bank, and oversaw operations of Gibraltar Savings Bank's Overlake Park branch.
Gov. Mike Lowry has appointed former parks superintendent Roger J. Contor to the state Fish and Wildlife Commission, a nine-member citizen body responsible for establishing Washington's hunting, trapping and fishing seasons. He replaces longtime Commissioner Norm Richardson, whose term has expired. Contor served as the first superintendent of North Cascades National Park from 1968 to 1970. Subsequently, he was superintendent of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Olympic National Park. In 1983, Contor became regional director of the National Parks in Alaska, where he was responsible for overseeing 54 million acres of land, including 20 million acres open to sport hunting and 44 million acres earmarked for Native American subsistence hunting. Since retiring in 1985, Contor has served on the board of directors for the Olympic Outdoor Sportsmen, the Kittitas County Field and Stream Club, and the Washington Wild Turkey Federation.
