Parallel Communications

Parallel Communications, a marketing communications firm based in Redmond, has hired four new employees. Ken Ray joins Parallel as online development manager. He spent five years with DDB Needham in Los Angeles managing the agency's computer systems, and developed expertise in project management and applications development while working in the software industry. Larry Roy, software engineer, formerly was with Integrated Technologies in Bothell, working as a programmer and software engineer on data acquisition and control systems. At Parallel Communications, he designs and writes Internet program applications to support client and agency Web sites. Mark Pace has been hired as multimedia director. Previously, Pace helped set up print production for Murdoch Magazines in New York. He also has done work as a freelance multimedia developer for a variety of Seattle-area multimedia companies. Shi Lee is the agency's newest graphic designer. Lee was hired after an internship with the company this summer.

University of Washington

Four University of Washington students have come up with the winning solution to a Harvard Business School case at the Undergraduate Challenge held at the University of Texas in Austin. The UW team also captured the Student's Choice award at the an annual business competition hosted by the Undergraduate Management Consulting Association. It marked the first time a University of Washington team has won the competition. The winning UW team was comprised of Kirkland Barrett, Dave Clark, Scott Cranston and Brenda Hay. All are planning to work in management consulting. The Undergraduate Challenge featured four-person teams from a dozen schools in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, who spent 36 hours analyzing a real-world business problem which challenged their qualitative and quantitative skills. The case focused on the Brazilian pulp-making company Aracruz Celulose S.A. and raised broad questions about the relationship between international trade agreements and the environment, and about the contribution that firms can make to sustainable development in Latin America and elsewhere in the tropics.

ARIS

The General Services Administration (GSA) has awarded a contract to ARIS Corp. for the Pacific Northwest/Arctic and Rocky Mountain regions in an effort to provide federally funded organizations and projects with easy access to top quality information systems consulting and training services. The contract, estimated at $1.5 million for the 1995-1996 period, allows any organization to utilize federal dollars by acquiring ARIS's services at a predetermined competitive fee without a long and cumbersome bidding process. Aris is based in Washington and specializes in finding business and organizational solutions through advanced technology. Not tied to any single software or hardware manufacturer, the company provides client/server and database consulting, execution and training on Oracle, Microsoft, UNIX, Sun and SAP technology.

Aviator Ales

Aviator Ales, Seattle's newest microbrewery, has started to bottle its first batches of hand-crafted ale. The first cases from the brewery are marked with a "Collector's Edition" logo. Installation of a high speed German bottling line is complete and bottles of Aviator Amber Ale, Honey Brown Ale, and Hefe Weizen are now being shipped to stores throughout the Puget Sound area. Aviator bottles bear labels featuring historic aircraft. Many depict planes made by the Boeing Company.

Pacific Linen

Richard N. Lodwick has joined Bothell-headquartered bed and bath retailer Pacific Linen as vice president of stores. Lodwick has more than 30 years of retail management experience, including regional vice president for Mervyn's Department Stores, where he worked for over 16 years. He also served as senior vice president/stores for McFrugals Inc. in Domingues, Calif., and for Sportstown Inc. in Atlanta. Also joining Pacific Linen as human resources director is Ira M. Duden. Duden previously served as administrator of human resources for Children's Hospital Medical Center in Seattle and director of human resources at Jafco, a division of Best Products Inc.

The Falconer Group

Jim Reid, manager of King County's Planning and Community Development Division from March 1992 until earlier this year, has opened a new management consulting and mediation firm based in Seattle called The Falconer Group. Under Reid's supervision, Planning and Community Development produced two landmark policy documents to implement the State's 1990 Growth Management Act: the Countywide Planning Policies and the 1994 King County Comprehensive Plan. He and his staff of 75 also developed and implemented nationally acclaimed programs in land use, housing, economic and community development, and environmental protection. Reid teaches mediation and negotiation at the University of Washington's Graduate School of Public Affairs.

The Fearey Group

The Fearey Group, a Seattle-based public relations and marketing communications firm, has promoted Scott Janzen to senior vice president. Janzen joined The Fearey Group in November 1994. His 18 years of communications experience includes 12 years of agency work with Cole & Weber, Elgin Syferd and Borders, Perrin & Norrander, along with his own firm, Janzen & Associates. He has supervised work on over 50 local and national accounts, including Eddie Bauer, Nintendo, Beck's Beer, Nalley's, McDonald's and the Washington State Lottery.

Sprague Israel Giles Inc.

Sprague Israel Giles of Seattle has announced the following changes: Employee benefits manager Sean P. Corry has been elected vice president of the firm. Susan Watchie Olden, formerly with a local brokerage, has joined the firm as a producer. And, John M. Policar, a 1994 graduate of the University of Washington, has joined the firm and will be a producer for both the commercial & personal lines insurance.

The Bartlett Group

Seattle public relations firm The Bartlett Group has added several new accounts, including McCormick & Schmick's newest restaurant on Seattle's Lake Union, KPFF Consulting Engineers, The Marjan Companies, Bay Pavilion at Pier 57 and the Washington Home Remodeling and Decorating Show.

YMCA of Seattle-King County

Holiday shoppers at Southcenter Mall can donate a new toy to homeless and low-income children at the YMCA of Seattle-King County through the mall's "Favorite Things" Gift Drive. Children and their parents are encouraged to purchase a new version of a favorite toy game or book and drop it, unwrapped, in the bin located near Mervyn's inside the Southcenter Mall, from Dec. 1-24.

VFX Advertising Inc.

Barb Kiliz, president of Seattle-based VFX Advertising Inc., is slated to be added to the 1996-97 directory of Who's Who in Executive Professionals. Kiliz has worked in the industry for over 15 years. He has been president of VFX for nearly four years. The company primarily serves industrial and business-to-business accounts in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Alaska.
