It was established in 1966 in memory of writer/editor Robert Worth Bingham. The prize recognizes investigations which involve violations or ineffective administration or enforcement, conflicts of interest, secrecy or otherwise raise questions of impropriety. In the five-part Seattle Times series, Acohido linked several deadly air crashes to the possible rudder defects in the Boeing 737 airplane. Within 24 hours after the last story was published, Boeing acknowledged a serious 737 rudder problem for the first time and the FAA ordered world-wide inspections.
