AdvanceOnline, a provider of online vital training solutions, announced the addition of Joseph Teeples, former Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training institute education center director as content manager. Teeples is responsible for overseeing and ensuring that course content satisfies OSHA standards and certain requirements as stated in their regulations.
Seattle Public Schools will receive more than $1 million from the San Francisco-based Stuart Foundation to help create an information system that will improve academic performance by better measuring the progress made by individual students, teachers, programs and schools. The system will provide a fuller picture than the district now has of the value added to a student's academic life over the course of a year. The foundation will contribute the money over the next three years.
Bullivant Houser Bailey, a Northwest law firm, announced the addition of Aaron Dean to its Seattle office. Dean is an associate and member of the firm's insurance practice group.
Ripcord Systems, a London- and Seattle-based developer of wireless products and services connecting mobile workforces with corporate enterprise systems, announced the addition of Morton Topfer to its board of directors, bringing nearly 40 years of worldwide experience in the mobile and high-tech sectors to the company. Topfer serves as counselor to Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell Computers, where he advises in matters such as operations, quality and customer experience issues.

The Northwest Minority Business Council hosted its Fifth Annual Awards Holiday Gala and Reception program at Salty's on Alki, Dec. 4. The awards were presented as follows; the Leadership Award to Brenda Dizer of Nike; the Champion Award to Alec Stephens of Sound Transit; the John Allen Glimore Award to College SBD; and the Robert J. Ryan Award to Jim Robison of Nike. Rhonda Edminson of U.S. Bancorp, Percy Jones of City of Tacoma, David Chinchar of Starbuck's and Chuck Van Hall of the state of Washington were each presented with Council Service Awards for empowering minority businesses to do business with large corporations. A Special Recognition Award was presented to the State of Washington General Services Administration for financial resources and support of the Minority Business Council.
The Friends of the Seattle Public Library elected new officers and board members at its annual meeting Nov. 5. New officers are: Barbara Mugford, president; Dennis Anderson, vice president; Betsy Graef, secretary; and Art Schneider, treasurer. New board members include Jean Nailbow and Charlotte Oakes. Four board members re-elected to three-year terms were Denise Harnly, Connie Horstman, Nancy Hevly and Spencer Shaw. The late Lise Larsen, longtime Friendship volunteer and book sorter, was named 2000 Friend of the Year.
Institute for Systems Biology founder Dr. Leroy Hood was recently honored by the International Association of Protein Structure Analysis and Proteomics as co-recipient of the 2000 Edman Award. Hood was recognized alongside colleague Michael Hunkapillar for advances in molecular biotechnology over the last two decades. Hood established the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle in January.
Linda Hartzell, artistic director of Seattle Children's Theatre, and the SCT board of trustees, announced that Kevin Maifeld, managing director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, will be named SCT's new managing director. Maifeld will begin his work at SCT in early April. His responsibilities will include directing the administration and finances of the theatre with a focus on external relationships, SCT endowment campaign, government and professional relations, and the SCT board of trustees.
Western Washington University President Karen Morse was recently elected to serve a one-year term beginning Jan.1 on the American Association of State College and Universities (AASCU) board of directors. AASCU is a national higher education association whose membership is comprised of more than 425 colleges, universities and systems of public higher education. Previously Morse has served as chair of the association's policies and purposes committee and its nominating committee
