    Ben Brungraber engineered the timber-framed Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center near Mount St. Helens. Beams for the project were salvaged from old sheds.

    Most houses in Europe are still built using heavy wooden timbers, often joined together using techniques that woodworkers of the Middle Ages knew well. In America, timber-frame construction fell by the wayside as the nation industrialized and expanded westward.
