Thompson Vaivoda & Associates

Portland architectural design firm, Thompson Vaivoda & Associates Architects, Inc. has promoted Clark Brockman, AIA and Andre DeBar, AIA to senior associates. Brockman was senior project manager for the Nike North Expansion and the Corvallis Osborn Aquatic Center. DeBar heads up sustainable design at TVA and is senior project manager for the Newport Community Center and the Pearl Block mixed-use project and was project architect for the Fox Tower. Seven other employees have been promoted to associate: John Heili, senior project manager for Viridian Place office building and Hoyt Park Condominiums; Joann Hermance, senior project manager for the Nike Athletic Center; R.J. Johnson, project manager for the Pearl Block; Monty Hill, project manager for design development; Ellen Morrison, business manager; Chuck Salvador, quality control manager; and Noel Snodgrass, information systems manager. Thompson Vaivoda has gained a national reputation for corporate campus design. Noteworthy among its corporate campuses under construction is the 1.2 million square foot, North Campus expansion for Nike in Beaverton, Ore., and Ericsson Village. The Nike expansion recently received an AIA Merit Award for design excellence and an honor award for design excellence from the American Society for Interior Designers and the International Interior Design Association.

David Evans and Associates

David Evans and Associates, Inc. (DEA), a professional services consulting firm providing multidisciplinary environmental and engineering services, has hired Cindy Baker, a 25-year environmental professional and program/project manager, as Environmental and Planning Group Manager. Previously, Baker was acting department manager at Berger/ABAM Engineers, department manager for URS Greiner, and supervising engineer for King County. She specializes in environmental analysis and assessments, management and planning, surfacewater management, land use development, engineering design review, and public involvement. Michael Booth, ACIP has joined DEA as a senior environmental planner. Booth previously worked as the senior transit planner at the city of SeaTac. Booth is currently managing private development projects, environmental/permitting work on fiber-optic projects with WSDOT, Jefferson County and private firms.

The Bellevue office of S.D. Deacon has hired Paul Clemetson as chief estimator and promoted Todd Peterson to senior estimator. Clemetson was formerly with Bird Construction and has also served as an estimating instructor for the Associated General Contractors of Washington. He has 15 years of industry experience and holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Peterson has been with the company for nearly seven years. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from North Park University in Chicago.

SmartElectrical

SmartElectrical, an Internet provider of services for the small- to medium-sized electrical contractor, has appointed three construction and Internet industry veterans to its core management team. The team includes Todd Ullom as vice president of sales and marketing, Chad Blevins as vice president of business development and Luisa Recalcati as chief technology officer. Ullom was most recently executive director of sales and business development at BuildNet, a B2B e-commerce firm focusing on the homebuilding industry. Blevins was previously vice president of business development at MagneTek, a maker of electronic power products. Recalcati was promoted from chief architect.

S.D. Deacon’s Special Projects Division has hired two new employees to help handle its growing business. The new hires include brothers Daniel P. Brammer and Thomas Brammer. Daniel, previously with Innovative Construction Services, has joined Deacon as superintendent for the Special Projects Division. He has been employed in the construction industry since 1990, with a solid background in tenant improvements. He also was a platoon sergeant and reconnaissance team leader for the U.S. Marines, with a 12-year career in the service. Thomas is a foreman in the Special Projects Division. He has 10 years of construction experience and has also worked extensively in tenant improvements.

Construction surety and insurance brokerage Bush, Cotton & Scott has hired Lawrence J. Newton, a 25-year industry veteran. Newton was most recently senior vice president with the Construction Services Group of Aon Risk Services in Seattle. He holds a bachelor's degree in business from Western Washington University.

DMI Drilling

Wigg
Sumner-based DMI Drilling Construction has added Molly Wigg to its engineering/estimating staff. Wigg has over 16 years of experience in geotechnical construction, including permanent and temporary excavation support systems for landslides, deep excavations, and large-diameter drilled deep foundations such as caissons, concrete shafts and underpinning piles. She holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Oregon State University.

ABC

Henry G. Kelly has been elected to serve as 2001 president of the Associated Builders and Contractors. Kelly is president and chief operating officer of Houston-based Austin Industrial. He will lead the national association and its 22,000-plus members in promoting the merit shop philosophy. Kelly has served in various chapter leadership positions and was president of ABC's Greater Houston Chapter in 1993. He also served on the national board of directors and was a regional vice president on ABC's Executive Committee.

HR roundtable

The Associated General Contractors of Washington Education Foundation is offering a free three-session roundtable forum in Seattle on human resource management. A seminar on construction litigation in Washington state will be held Feb. 9 in Seattle by Lorman Education Services. The program will feature presentations by Paul R. Cressman and Charles R. Tax strategies

An open forum on business and individual tax strategies will be part of the monthly meeting of the Puget Sound Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction. The event, which includes dinner, will be held 6-8:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Duke’s Chowder House, 23 Lake Bellevue Drive, Bellevue. The forum will be presented by Martha Bath, a CPA with Moss Adams. The AGC of America is offering a "super conference" on project delivery systems on Feb. 7-9 in Dallas. CQM

A course on construction quality management for contractors will be held Jan. 26 in Tacoma by the AGC of Washington Education Foundation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
