Got a polluted site? Try a little fungi

  • An environmental services firm based in Port Angeles says using fungi to clean up pollution is cheaper and greener than alternatives.

    This mushroom, chlorophyllum oliverei, is one the firm is testing for bioremediation. Fungi have the longest track record for breaking down petroleum, but can break down PCBs and dioxins, at least in the laboratory.

    Turns out that fungi are good for more than beer, penicillin and stir fries. The Remediators, an environmental services firm in Port Angeles, is using fungi to clean up polluted properties.
