Ominous cloud hangs over Portland contractors

  • An economic report says more jobs will be lost this year in Oregon, but the bloodletting will cease in 2011.

    PORTLAND — General contractors in the Portland-metro area are predicting a gloomy 2010, with tight credit, smaller workloads and hardly any private-sector commercial deals.

    Bryan Ward is one such pessimist. The president of Skyward Construction in Ridgefield, Clark County, Ward said his firm has a backlog of roughly $5 million worth of contracts, compared to the nearly $20 million it had a year ago.
