Alaska Power lays its first major undersea fiber link; like adding a 28,000-lane road

Davy Chan of International Telecom pulls a guide line as fiber optic cable is brought to shore in Haines, Alaska, for Alaska Power and Telephone Co. This is the first fiber-optic link between Juneau and the northern end of Lynn Canal, bringing faster, more reliable internet service to small towns and the Yukon.

HAINES, Alaska — On a cloudy Friday morning, in a tent on a windblown beach near the ferry terminal here, Rick Chislett delicately fed a glass fiber the thickness of a human hair into a piece of electronic equipment.
