The Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties and the Puget Sound Section of the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association recognized two area government officials and a city planning department for their leadership. Public Employee of the Year awards were given to Burien's Community Development Director Scott Greenberg and Marysville's Community Development Director Gloria Hirashima. An Outstanding Performance by a Department award was given to the city of Auburn's Community Development Department. The award program was created to honor public employees who best exemplify the spirit of seeking meaningful solutions to the challenges presented by growth while maintaining responsible environmental stewardship.
The city of SeaTac's Department of Public Works Engineering Division won the 2008 Best City Paving Project for Western Washington award from the American Public Works Association and Washington Asphalt Paving Association. The city and its contractor, Tucci & Sons, were nominated for the award for an improvement project to Military Road between South 176th and 188th streets.
Employees of Canyon Creek Cabinet Co. contributed $5,324 and more than 170 pounds of food to the Sky Valley Food Bank. The Monroe-based company made the donation just before Thanksgiving. It also donated wood to a local group of toy makers, who are making about 200 items — including puzzles, pull-toys and wooden animals — to give to a local women's shelter this month.
