A jury of the American Institute of Architects has named James R. Merritt and Michael E. Smith to its College of Fellows, an honor awarded members who have made contributions of national significance.

Merritt, of the Tacoma firm Merrittarch, is the current president of the Southwest Washington Chapter of AIA. He is credited with formulating many ideas and significant restoration of Tacoma's historic central business district. He rallied the local AIA for a freeway design that prevented compromising Tacoma's historic downtown district and waterfront.

Smith, of Bellingham's Zervas Group Architects, was responsible for regional and urban design assistance teams for downtown Bellingham. He has focused on public awareness for the Northwest Washington AIA chapter, which has seen growth increase 400 percent under his leadership. He has helped defeat several bills in the state Legislature that would have eliminated qualifications-based selections for contracting architectural work in Washington. He also helped establish AIA Washington Council's Annual Assembly, where attendees can earn continuing education units.
