Architect Rick Meyer of Callison dead at 62

C. Richard “Rick” Meyer, who joined Callison Architecture when the firm opened in 1976, died Friday at the age of 62.

Meyer, who retired from Callison a year ago, was principal-in-charge of the firm's retail and program management studios. He oversaw the office's quality assurance and risk management programs and led the firm's work in Korea.

His clients included Washington Mutual, for whom he managed design of more than 2,000 branches nationwide, and Verizon Wireless, with more than 150 projects in the West and Midwest.

Other clients included Nordstrom, Boeing, Microsoft, Samsung and LG.

In addition to Korea, he had projects in Brazil and India. His remodel and renovation projects included The Benson Hotel in Portland and the Camlin Hotel in Seattle.

Meyer was inducted into the AIA College of Fellows in 2000, and was president of the Seattle chapter in 1996 and 1997. He also served as chair of the AIA National Risk Management Committee in 1995.

Meyer was born in Schenectady, N.Y. Between 1968 and 1971, he served at the U.S. Naval Communications Station in Yokosuka, Japan. He continued as a Naval reserve officer for 23 years.

Meyer earned his architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and did post-graduate studies at the University of Washington. He was founder and a supporting member of the UW College of Architecture and Urban Planning Professionals Advisory Council, where he helped initiate the model Student Practicum Program in Architecture.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bonney-Watson Parker Chapel, 900 S.W. 146th St., Burien.
