ZGF puts worms to work on compost

Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects has started a worm composting bin in its Seattle office, along with other sustainable initiatives. The ZGF office received LEED-CI certification for its Seattle office in 2004.

Worms convert recycled food waste such as fruit and vegetable peels, tea bags, egg shells, coffee grounds and other lunch leftovers into a rich soil that is taken home and used by gardeners. The bin started with 500 worms and they are multiplying rapidly. They eat six pounds of food per week (half of the total ZGF food waste). Employees weigh food and help create a balanced diet for the worms.

ZGF has other sustainable initiatives. The firm maintains parking spaces in the building for shared hybrid office vehicles, and its Greening the Office Program provides recommendations for sustainable office supplies, such as sustainable coffee cups. Notebooks for employees are made from recycling office paper.
