September 5, 2007
Kirkland organizations, businesses and city officials are holding Sustainable September, a month-long conference starting Sept. 14 to increase public awareness about sustainability.
The conference is sponsored by the Kirkland Chamber, the city of Kirkland, Lake Washington Technical College, Puget Sound Energy, businesses, schools and individuals. Funding comes from a Department of Ecology grant and local businesses.
There will be continuing-education classes designed for Realtors, engineers, builders, developers, mortgage brokers, bankers and others. The public is also invited to attend special events about sustainability.
Sustainable September starts Wednesday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. in downtown Kirkland with a street dance that includes entertainment and speeches.
The kickoff event for businesses will be Sept. 14 from 8 to 9 a.m. at Lake Washington Technical College. Attorney General Rob McKenna will speak on how businesses can benefit from state and community initiatives. The city of Kirkland will also unveil its Green Business program, which provides information to firms on ways to reduce their impact on the environment.
To find out more about events and seminars, go to the event’s Web site at http://www.sustainableseptember.com or contact Brenda Nunes, president of the Kirkland Chamber, at (425) 827-7701.
