Middle school will use geothermal heat

Hamilton International Middle School will soon get a system of innovative wells that use the ambient temperature of soil to heat and cool the building. A geothermal-heat-pump system similar to the one in use at the renovated Madison Middle School is part of renovation plans for the 80-year-old school.

In June, the Seattle Public School Board voted to meet or exceed the global warming reduction targets of the Kyoto Protocol. The new pump system will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 287 tons each year and save the district $54,961 in utility costs.

The wells will be installed six feet below the Wallingford Playfield. Installation is expected to take 16 months and the district will restore the field afterward. More information can be found at http://www.seattleschools.org/schools/hamilton/design/ss/index.htm
