Tighter rules proposed for condo conversions

  • State legislation would require building owners to give tenants more notice, and could let cities and counties limit conversions.

    Lawmakers in Olympia are considering a proposal that could double the tenant notice period required for condo conversions and increase the amount cities and counties can require owners to pay for tenant relocation assistance.

    A House version of the bill passed Jan. 18. If the companion bill passes the Senate, Seattle City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen said Seattle could raise its tenant relocation assistance from its current maximum of $500 to three times the monthly rent of those eligible. That would cover low-income tenants' moving expenses, and the first and last month's rent deposit often required at a new apartment, Rasmussen said.
