Brightwater outfall designers win award

The Consulting Engineers of British Columbia honored North Vancouver, B.C.-based Dayton & Knight Ltd., for the company’s role in the Brightwater project. Dayton & Knight was the principal design consultant for the wastewater treatment project’s marine outfall.

Triton Marine Construction completed the design/build project in late 2008, a year ahead of schedule, for $29 million, or 23 percent less than the estimated cost. The King County and Vanir Construction Management managed the project.

Dayton & Knight Vice President John Boyle said the design had to meet stringent seismic standards and hydraulic requirements so that treated effluent will mix effectively with the waters of Puget Sound. Also, the project required at least 75 years of operating life, and to ensure the design would reduce impacts to the marine environment during construction and operation.

The 650-foot-deep outfall will serve as the primary discharge point for the plant north of Woodinville when it begins operating in 2011. Now resting on the floor of Puget Sound a mile off Point Wells, it is one of the world’s deepest outfalls.

Boyle said the award reflects the competency of the entire project team.
