Students at Mukilteo’s Explorer Middle School won second prize in the annual School of the Future Design Competition.
The team received $1,500 for its design, which include walls insulated with recycled jeans, green roof, graywater recycling, a wetland and composting areas. The design also considers the needs of the larger community, providing a playground, sports fields, gym, library, computer lab, and auditorium for students and citizens.
The event is sponsored by the National Association of Realtors, Council of Educational Facility Planners International, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the American Institute of Architects and other associations and private companies.
Registration is open for the 2010 competition; for details, see http://www.cefpi.org.
