11 projects win NWAIA 2015 design awards

Eleven projects won 2015 design awards from the Northwest Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

There were 27 submissions.

Projects must be designed by NWAIA member architects or an architect whose main office is in Island, San Juan, Skagit or Whatcom counties.

The top award is honor, followed by merit and then citation. The chapter also gave a sustainability award.

Winners ranged from a small, private residence in Anacortes to a redesign for Sunshine Alley in Friday Harbor.

Jason Willard of RMC Architects received the Young Architects/Associates Award. Willard got his architectural license in 2011 and practiced in Boston for five years before joining RMC. The chapter said he has been a leader in master planning, architecture and interior design for public and private projects, and has managed some of RMC’s largest and most complex projects.

Here is the awards jury: Ray Colliver, former vice president of construction at Vulcan Real Estate; Heidi Epstein, interior designer for Suyama Peterson Deguchi; and Cynthia Richardson, a Northwest architect.
