Ankrom health center wins AIA award

Eastside Health Center at 12121 E. Burnside St. in Portland is one of seven projects that won Healthcare Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health.

The annual awards recognize buildings, planning and design-oriented research.

Ankrom Moisan Architects designed the six-story, 110,000-square-foot center, which won in the unbuilt project category. It is now being built by Walsh Construction Co.

Central City Concern is developing the center for its headquarters.

“Central City Concern will provide comprehensive case management and clinical services to support stabilization for rebuilding lives of our most vulnerable population focusing on substance use and disorder programs,” Ankrom Moisan said in press material.

The center will include a clinic and pharmacy; retail space; 34 transitional housing studios; 10 palliative-care rooms; 80 transitional housing single-room occupancy units and 19 respite care SROs; and eight dormitory respite care four-bedroom units.

AMA said this new model for health centers creates four modules with SRO units clustered around a central commons. The shared spaces include a central shower, toilet rooms, kitchen and living rooms. Each module has been “pushed and pulled apart” to maximize daylight and offer access to outdoor spaces for therapy, gardens and contemplation. There's also a public plaza.

Residents will move in next May, and the clinic will open in July.

The jury said in a statement: “The scale of the building is human, providing spaces that emphasize recovery over warehousing.”

The project team includes HHPR Consulting Engineers, civil engineer; Miller Consulting Engineers, structural engineer; Glumac, mechanical engineer, plumbing, electrical, energy modeling and lighting design; and Shapiro Didway Landscape Architects.
