Lessons for Seattle from Hong Kong

Project designer Aaron Blaha won a 2018 travel scholarship from his firm, Caron Architecture, to go this month to Hong Kong to see what that dense city can teach Seattle about growth.

Hong Kong has over 7 million people. It is estimated that 20,000 people are moving to Seattle each year, according to Blaha. Both cities are going through a housing boom on limited land, and people must adapt, he wrote in his application.

Hong Kong's mountainous geography has forced developers to build tall. Hong Kong Island and its sister city of Kowloon are incredibly dense, with hundreds of residential towers of over 400 feet, Blaha wrote.

“As real estate becomes more expensive here, developers are looking to us to create not only beautiful and functional buildings, but efficient ones,” he wrote. “I think that Hong Kong has something to teach us about our city's future.”
