Sustainable design event on Sept. 13

Metropolis Magazine, in association with Seattle-based International Living Future Institute, will host a free symposium on sustainable architecture and design Sept. 13 at Seattle Central Library at 1000 Fourth Ave.

According to the announcement, the event will focus on reducing the environmental impact of the building industry, which accounts for more than 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

It will consist of two panel discussions open to industry professionals and one open to the public. The panels will include Seattle architecture and design professionals, educators, manufacturers and others who will discuss their work, challenges regarding sustainable materials and carbon accounting, how to mitigate the negative impact of material and product choices in buildings, and advances in building materials and technologies.

The professional panels are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Panelists include Scott Crawford of LMN Architects, Margaret Montgomery of NBBJ, Kate Simonen of the University of Washington, Myer Harrell of Weber Thompson, Sean Cryan of Mithun, and Stacy Smedley of Skanska.

The public program, at 3:45 p.m., will focus on design that has a positive and nurturing effect on ecosystems. It will look at how to scale the efforts, influence policy, and make regenerative architecture and design a reality.

Speakers include Chris Davis of the Office of Gov. Jay Inslee, Chris Hellstern of The Miller Hull Partnership, Brian Runberg of Runberg Architecture Group, Ryan Smith of LightArt, and George Bandy Jr. of Mohawk Group.
