Topics at the summit include zoning strategies to encourage more “missing middle” housing options such as duplexes.

The Build Small Live Large summit will be held Nov. 7 at Portland State University's Smith Center in downtown Portland.

The biennial event is where innovators share what's working in their cities, and promote the best strategies to regulate, design, build and finance smaller homes and “missing middle” housing options, according to the event announcement. It is sponsored by Metro, AARP, the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development and Oregon Transportation and Growth Management.

Topics include “Changing the Rules for Residential Neighborhoods: More Choices, Smaller Homes”; “Creative Approaches for Temporary Housing Solutions”; “What's New with ADUs? Legislation, Development Costs and Valuation”; and “Meeting in the Middle — Effective Zoning Strategies for Missing Middle Housing.”

Richard Rothstein will give a keynote address on how the federal, state and local governments segregated every major metropolitan area in America through law and policy. Rothstein is a distinguished fellow of the Economic Policy Institute.

There's also an optional guided bus tour on Nov. 8 titled “Portland's Hidden Discriminatory Housing History,” presented by the Fair Housing Council of Oregon. Register for it and the summit at https://tinyurl.com/y52zvz8j/. Early bird registration ends Oct. 18.
