The Port of Everett is leading an effort, in partnership with the city of Mukilteo, to establish a unified vision for undeveloped shoreline properties in Mukilteo, stretching from Lighthouse Park to Edgewater Beach.
The properties include the former NOAA Research Station that will soon transfer back to port ownership. The port has hired architect NBBJ to begin initial planning, including data gathering and community engagement, to help inform the vision.
The port said that “with 11 property owners over 26 acres, the waterfront needs a comprehensive development strategy to ensure a quality and accessible mix of uses at the waterfront.” The first deliverable will be a statement of guiding principles for the redevelopment. Once the guiding principles are approved by the Port Commission and Mukilteo City Council, they will be used to guide the planning and design process for the future of the waterfront.
Yesterday, the port and partners launched an online open house with a survey for community members to provide feedback and suggestions for the project. The survey is live until May 26 and can be accessed at http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ YYKZG7K/.
The survey asks for feedback on a draft vision statement and draft set of guiding principles that were developed by a waterfront stakeholder workgroup. The draft principles envision the waterfront as a pedestrian friendly, year-round destination that provides educational opportunities and embraces and celebrates the history and diversity of the people and cultures that have called Mukilteo home.
Current development at the waterfront includes the upcoming demolition of the former NOAA facility, which should provide an opportunity for interim access to the waterfront, and the construction of a parklet and outdoor dining area at the old ferry landing site next to Ivar's restaurant. Both projects are set to be completed by the end of this year.
