GitHub offices blend workplace with ‘at home' aesthetic

Coding company GitHub's first physical location in the Pacific Northwest is now open. The new office is located over three floors and 61,000 square feet in the Skyline Tower in Bellevue. The company signed the lease in early 2020 and soon after hired Interior Architects to design the new space.

Even before the pandemic, GitHub was operating a hybrid work model. This drove the design and vision for the new office.

“As a company with a 60% remote workforce, it was important for the design to be divided evenly between community spaces and workplace,” IA said in a statement about the project.

The offices are intended to be a space where people would want to come to, rather than feel forced to. The design and layout blurs residential and workplace elements and aesthetics. The mix of work spaces include enhanced meeting rooms, a light-filled open work area and phone booths for private focused work. There are also “zoom rooms,” decorated like a living room with plush furnishings and in-built dark wood shelving, where at-home and in-office workers can connect and collaborate.

The office is also designed to encourage interaction and socialization. It has multiple food service areas including coffee, server, and bar/lounge experiences. Biophilia is a dominant aesthetic “with organic elements juxtaposed throughout the spatial architectural features (that) create a calming and sustainable environment.”

IA was awarded Office Interior of the Year for the project at the 2021 NAIOP Night of the Stars gala.

The project team includes: Kilroy Realty, developer/owner; Interior Architects, architect; BNBuilders, general contractor; Newmark Knight Frank, broker; Brightworks, LEED administration; Ambius, plantscaping; Engineering Economics, LEED commissioning; Image Mill, EGD installation; TwoFurnish, furniture; A3 Acoustics; Code Unlimited, code review; DCI Engineers, structural; MacDonald Miller, mechanical and plumbing; McKinstry, fire suppression; Northwest Woodworks, millwork; and Titan, electric.
